South American coca (Erythroxylum coca and E. novogranatense) has been a keystone crop for many Andean and Amazonian communities for at least 8,000 years. However, over the last half-century, global demand for its alkaloid cocaine has driven intensive agriculture of this plant and placed it in the center of armed conflict and deforestation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAsteraceae is the world's richest plant family and is found on all continents, in environments ranging from the coast to the highest mountains. The family shows all growth forms and, as in other angiosperm families, species richness is concentrated in tropical regions. South America has the highest diversity of Asteraceae in the world, yet taxonomic and distributional knowledge gaps remain.

The structures of all compounds were established based on their spectral data (IR, MS, and NMR). Fucosterol (1) and its derivatives (2-12, and a mixture of 13a and 13b) were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 10031), Escherichia coli (ATCC 10536), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 0046) and Staphylococcus aureus using the microdilution method.

Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and gauge independent atomic orbitals C NMR calculations. The isolated compounds were screened for their effects on intestinal motility using guinea-pig ileum and duodenum and by their cytotoxicity against 4 human cancer cell lines (HCT-116, SF-295, PC-3, and HL-60).

The most common causes of DCLD are lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH). DCLD develops rarely as a result of malignancy, typically secondary to metastases from peripheral sarcomas and mesenchymal tumors.

We report a case of obstructive jaundice due to a metastatic breast carcinoma to the major duodenal papilla, and assess curative and palliative treatment that interventional endoscopy can offer.
