In a prospective longitudinal study, 26 patients with facial-profile changes by surgery in the upper and/or lower jaw were evaluated concerning motivational factors and the outcome of surgery. Subjective criteria, i.e.

In animal experiments with fully-grown beagle dogs we followed the healing of autologous spongiosa, collagen and binding gelatine by the use of polychrome sequential labelling. We found that when autologous spongiosa is transplanted into the periodontal intrabony pocket, the new material is fully remodelled after 6 weeks. When collagen is implanted, there is also a large amount of bone formed during this time.

The presence of premature contacts was determined via instrumental functional analysis. The statistically evaluated findings establish that occlusal interference has a damaging influence on osteoclasis in the presence of inflammation.

The healing of standardized bony defects in the region of the mandible following implantation of various heterologous bony components was controlled in animal experiments via polychromatic sequential labeling. The implant of gelatin foam did not accelerate healing. The combination of gelatin and solcoseryl led to accelerated mineralization in the marginal area.

During the Caldwell-Luc antrum operation, there is a resultant bone defect in the area of the canine fossa. Scarry tissue from the cheek seals this defect, narrows or sometimes obliterates the antrum completely and thereby disturbs the normal physiology of the mid-face. We report about a new procedure in which the facial fenestration is primarily reconstructed by means of a trap-door like bone flap with adherent soft tissue.

Scar tissue grows across this defect and sometimes obliterates and interferes with the antral physiology. This paper presents our experience with the reconstruction of the defect by means of the osteotomised canine fossa bone with adhering soft tissues.

Healing of cancellous bone grafts taken from the iliac crest which were implanted in alveolar bone pockets were followed with polychromatic sequence marking in animal experiments using beagle dogs. Healing of the cancellous bone graft is unproblematic only in the case of one- and two-walled defects. A periodontal fissure of normal width, but perforated by ankyloses, formed within seven weeks.

Information acquired via the panorama tomograph was compared with that obtained via the occipitodental plain film of the paranasal sinuses. Almost all findings in the basal maxillary sinuses were better identified and localized on the panorama film. A plain film of the paranasal sinuses however cannot be dispensed with since assessment of the whole maxillary sinus is only possible on the plain film.
