Intravascular transplantation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is a promising therapeutic approach after acute myocardial infarction. Efficacy and targeting of myocardial cell engraftment are crucial variables determining the therapeutic value of MSC transplantation. Highly focused ultrasound-mediated stimulation of microbubbles (hf-UMS) allows locoregional pre-treatment of target tissue.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cEPC and circulating mononuclear cells (MNC), which include a small number of in vivo circulating EPC, are able to transmigrate through the endothelial barrier into the cardiac tissue. MNC and EPC were isolated from the peripheral blood from healthy male volunteers (n = 13, 25+/-6 years) and stained with a fluorescent marker.

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are circulating precursor cells that have been implicated recently in vascular and cardiac regeneration. There is an ongoing discussion on the immunocytological definition of EPCs, based on various surface markers, and currently different cell types are included in the term 'EPC'. This review summarizes the mechanisms that influence function, survival, mobilization and differentiation of EPCs.
