Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the correlation between dermoscopic and histological features in dogs with alopecia X, comparing longitudinal and transversal skin biopsy sectioning methods.
  • Nineteen affected Pomeranians and five healthy controls were assessed to identify specific hair loss patterns and skin changes associated with the disorder.
  • Results show that dermoscopic findings correspond well with histological observations, particularly regarding hair follicle density and growth phases when using transversal sections, indicating the potential for improved diagnosis in alopecia X.

We retrieved 19 IPs from 3 histopathology archives, and evaluated and scored koilocytes, inclusion bodies, giant keratohyalin granules, cytoplasmic pallor, ballooning degeneration, and parakeratosis.
