Nanofiltration (NF) has been used as the default sulfate removal process in platforms to treat seawater for water flooding. Seawater is generally pretreated by chlorination and cartridge filters to reduce fouling of the membranes; however, this pretreatment is insufficient to provide water quality high enough to maintain the productivity of the NF membranes. In this study, the performances of two different pretreatment routes were evaluated.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) are considered endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) and they may be harmful to the normal functioning of endocrine systems of humans and animals. Moreover, the presence of these compounds in superficial and groundwater may represent serious risks, even in low concentrations like ng·L. The objectives of this study were to remove BPA and EE2 from solutions containing a mixture of these compounds in ultrapure water at low concentrations through reverse osmosis (RO) membrane combined with a UV/HO process.

Synthetic hormone 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) is not completely removed by conventional wastewater treatment plants and therefore is often detected in surface and groundwater, sludge and sediments. Due to its persistence in the environment and its estrogenic potential, a high removal of EE2 from wastewaters before its disposal has become a concern from an environmental point of view, particularly when considering urban reuse applications. This work investigated the application of advanced processes to treat synthetic municipal wastewater containing EE2 after treatment in a membrane bioreactor (MBR).

The oil refinery industry seeks solutions to reduce its water uptake and consumption by encouraging the reuse of internal streams and wastewater from treatment systems. After conventional treatment the petroleum refinery wastewater still contains a considerable quantity of recalcitrant organics and the adsorption on activated carbon is currently used in Brazilian refineries, although it is still expensive due to the difficulty of its regeneration. This study evaluated the use of adsorbent and ion exchange resins for the removal of organic matter from refinery wastewater after conventional treatment in order to verify its feasibility, applying successive resin regenerations and comparing the results with those obtained for activated carbon process.

The presence of micropollutants in sewage is already widely known, as well as the effects caused by natural and synthetic hormones. Thus, it is necessary to apply treatments to remove them from water systems, such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and membrane separation processes, which can oxidize and remove high concentrations of organic compounds. This work investigated the removal of 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and estriol (E3) from biotreated sewage.
