The ladder phenyl/vinyl polysilsesquioxane (PhVPOSS) was used to improve the flame-retardancy performances of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/aluminum hydroxide (ATH) composites due to the reactivity of its vinyl groups. FTIR, XPS, H NMR, and SEM-EDS data demonstrated the PhVPOSS grafting onto EVA molecular chains. The PhVPOSS improved the thermal stability of EVA/ATH composites, as shown by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

Background: Pancreaticoduodenectomy combined with portal vein (PV) and/or superior mesenteric vein (SMV) resection in patients with pancreaticobiliary malignancy has become a common surgical procedure. There are various grafts currently used for PV and/or SMV reconstruction, but each of these grafts have certain limitations. Therefore, it is necessary to explore novel grafts that have an extensive resource pool, are low cost with good clinical application, and are without immune response rejection or additional damage to patients.

Anastomotic techniques are of vital importance in restoring gastrointestinal continuity after resection. An alternative asymmetric figure-of-eight single-layer suture anastomotic technique was introduced and its effects were evaluated in an porcine model. Twelve 15-cm grossly healthy small intestine segments from a porcine cadaver were harvested and randomly divided into asymmetric figure-of-eight single-layer suture (figure-of-eight suture) and single-layer interrupted suture technique (interrupted suture) groups ( = 6 in each group).

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the use of PTPET elastomer, a moisture-resistant alternative to polyurethane, synthesized using a MiniLab twin-screw reactor instead of traditional methods for better data insights.
  • Researchers calculated the activation energy of PTPET elastomer based on torque variations during synthesis at different temperatures, and synthesized composites with flame retardants that enhance various properties without compromising the material's structure.
  • Comprehensive characterization of the elastomers and composites indicated that flame retardants improve flame resistance, forming a protective char layer while preserving the original qualities of PTPET, suggesting its potential as a versatile engineering material.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most universal and devastating primary intracranial neoplasm in the central nervous system. Urolithin A (UA) possesses many pharmacological and biological activities, but its function in GBM is not clear. CCK-8 and colony formation test were used to measure the anti-proliferative potency of UA against GBM cells.

Reasonable cropping pattern can improve resource utilization efficiency, reduce environmental risks in agricultural production, and achieve the goal of resource saving coupled with high production and efficiency. We evaluated the production effects of typical cropping patterns in an arid irrigation region from several aspects, including resource utilization, carbon emissions, economic benefit, emergy self-sufficiency ratio and net emergy yield ratio, with the method of emergy theory, to provide theoretical and practical basis for the establishment of efficient cropping with lower resource investment and carbon emissions but higher yield and resource utilization efficiency combined with the sustainability of agricultural production. The results showed that, high-efficient wheat-maize intercropping production pattern (integration of no tillage with 25 to 30 cm height of wheat straw covering in the wheat strip and two-year plastic mulching in the maize strip, NTSI) had the best performance in grain yield boosting, with the yields 13.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), known to affect children, is a major cause of severe encephalopathy. Its prevalence has been percolated over wider regions of Southern Asia. JEV is associated with neurodegeneration, severe inflammation, increased oxidative stress and elevated levels of stress linked proteins.

This study elucidates the significance of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), CD14, and nuclear factor (NF)-κB on the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Colonic biopsy specimens were collected from active UC and controls. The expression of TLR4, CD14, and NF-κBp 65 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Objective: The validity of quality of care measurement has important implications for practicing clinicians, their patients, and all involved with health care delivery. We used empirical data from managed care patients enrolled in west coast physician organizations to test the hypothesis that observed changes in health-related quality of life across a 2.5-year window reflecting process of care.

Background: The validity of quality of care assessments relies upon data quality, yet little is known about the relative completeness and validity of data sources for evaluating the quality of care.

Objectives: We evaluated concordance between ambulatory medical record and patient survey data. Levels of concordance, variations by type of item, sources of disagreement between data sources, and implications for quality of care assessment efforts are discussed.

Objective: To explore the mechanism of acupuncture in treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI).

Methods: Adult Wistar rats were used to make SCI model by Allen's method. The SCI rats were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) at acupoints of the Governor Vessel for 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks or 4 weeks.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Fa Hu"

  • Recent research by Fa Hu focuses on two main areas: enhancing material properties in polymer science and exploring innovative surgical techniques in gastroenterology.
  • Hu's study on EVA/ATH composites demonstrates a significant improvement in flame-retardancy and thermal stability through the grafting of ladder phenyl/vinyl polysilsesquioxane (PhVPOSS).
  • Additionally, Hu's work on surgical grafts, particularly using the ligamentum teres hepatis, addresses limitations in current practices for portal and superior mesenteric vein reconstructions, highlighting the need for effective and low-cost alternatives in surgical applications.
