Silver nanoparticles on a glass substrate are experimentally investigated by aperture scanning near-field optical microscopy (a-SNOM). To understand the experimental results, finite-element-method simulations are performed building a theoretical model of the a-SNOM geometry. We systematically vary parameters like aperture size, aluminum-coating thickness, tip cone angle, and tip-surface distance and discuss their influence on the near-field enhancement.

Metal-free heterogeneous catalysis is promising in the context of H generation. Therefore, establishing structure-activity relationships is a crucial issue to improve the development of more efficient catalysts. Herein, to evaluate the reactivity of the oxygen functionalities in carbonaceous materials, commercial functionalized pyrolytically stripped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were used as catalysts in the liquid-phase hydrous hydrazine decomposition process and its activity was compared to that of a pristine CNF material.

We present a combined real and reciprocal space structural and microstructural characterization of CeO nanoparticles (NPs) exhibiting different crystallite sizes; ~3 nm CeO NPs were produced by an inverse micellae wet synthetic path and then annealed at different temperatures. X-ray total scattering data were analyzed by combining real-space-based Pair Distribution Function analysis and the reciprocal-space-based Debye Scattering Equation method with atomistic models. Subtle atomic-scale relaxations occur at the nanocrystal surface.

Herein we report a combined experimental and computational investigation unravelling the hydrazine hydrate decomposition reaction on metal-free catalysts. The study focuses on commercial graphite and two different carbon nanofibers, pyrolytically stripped (CNF-PS) and high heat-treated (CNF-HHT), respectively, treated at 700 and 3000 °C to increase their intrinsic defects. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated a correlation between the initial catalytic activity and the intrinsic defectiveness of carbonaceous materials.

The local efficiency of hybrid ZnO-nanorods/C/ZnPc:C/MoO/Ag solar cells, with different nanorods length has been investigated by scanning near-field optical microscopy. Simultaneous spatially resolved measurements of topography and photocurrent suggest a waveguide effect enhancement of the local photocurrent. This interpretation is supported by finite element method simulations of the light propagation in the solar cell.

Most of the plants employed to remove metals from contaminated soils are annuals and have a seed-to-seed life cycle of a few months, usually over spring and summer. Consequently, for most of the year, fields are not actively cleaned but are completely bare and subject to erosion by water and wind. The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefits of using Lupinus albus as a winter crop in a rotation sequence with a summer crop ideally selected for phytoextraction, such as industrial hemp.

This study was undertaken to investigate combined toxic and genotoxic effects of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) on white clover, a pollutant sensitive plant frequently used as environmental bioindicator. Plants were exposed to soil spiked with increasing concentrations of cadmium sulfate (20, 40 and 60 mg Kg-1) or sodium arsenite (5, 10 and 20 mg Kg-1) as well as with their combinations. Metal(loid) bioavailability was assessed after soil contamination, whereas plant growth, metal(loid) concentration in plant organs and DNA damage were measured at the end of plant exposition.

The new era of spintronics promises the development of nanodevices, where the electron spin will be used to store information and charge currents will be replaced by spin currents. For this, ferromagnetic semiconductors at room temperature are needed. We report on significant room-temperature spin polarization of EuS in Co/EuS multilayers recorded by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD).

Background: Recent studies have highlighted the possibility of using a mixture of three fungal toxins produced by Ascochyta caulina as a bioherbicide to control noxious weeds. However, to assess the commercial potential of this new bioherbicide, it is necessary to increase knowledge regarding the environmental behaviour of these toxins, and particularly their effects on non-target organisms. A negative ecotoxicological profile of this potential bioherbicide could eventually hinder its registration.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of painful neuropathy and to date, besides a tight glycemic control, a viable treatment for this complication is not available. Rimonabant is a selective cannabinoid CB(1) receptor antagonist that produces a significant increase in insulin sensitivity and a reduction of HbA(1c) in diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of rimonabant in relieving diabetes-induced neuropathic pain.

This study explored the comet assay as a possible tool to assess genotoxicity in erythrocytes of Columba livia to detect genotoxic effects induced by exposure to urban air pollution. Fieldwork was conducted between June 2004 and June 2005 in the city of Milan, Italy, by sampling pigeons in different areas almost twice a week. Six air contaminants-CO, PM10, NO(2), O(3) (ozone), SO(2), and C6H6-plus polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fine particles, temperature, and ultraviolet index, were considered.

In this study, we present our experimental results on the optical, magnetic, as well as magneto-optic properties of hexagonal arrays of subwavelength holes in optically thin cobalt films. Different meshes were used with hole diameters ranging between 220 and 330 nm while the interhole distance has been kept constant at 470 nm. The hole pattern modifies completely the magnetic behavior of the cobalt films; it gives rise to an increase of the coercive field of the in-plane magnetization with increasing hole diameter and to the appearance of out-of-plane magnetization components.

A series of nanocrystalline Co/Au multilayers with ultrathin Au interlayers was grown at room temperature by electron beam evaporation on Si(111), glass and polyimide substrates. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a face centered cubic multilayered structure with very small nanograins within 7-10 nm in diameter. Magneto-optic polar Kerr effect experiments show an enhancement of the Kerr rotation around 3 eV as the Au interlayer thickness increases.
