Rice prolamin, constituting type-I protein body (PB-I), is indigestible and causes deterioration of rice protein nutritional quality. In this study, the in vivo digestibility of rice protein isolates was investigated by tracing their intraluminal transit in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of rats by western blotting and by observing the structures excreted in the feces by electron microscopy. Sall1 is expressed in the metanephric mesenchyme in the developing kidney, and mice deficient in Sall1 show kidney agenesis or dysgenesis. Sall1 is also expressed elsewhere, including in the limb buds, anus, heart, and central nervous system. Dominant-negative mutations of Sall1 in mice and humans lead to developmental defects in these organs.

Human SALL1 is a homologue of the Drosophila region-specific homeotic gene sal, and is also known as a causative gene for Townes-Brocks syndrome, which is characterized by multi-organ malformations. We previously demonstrated that mouse Sall1 plays a crucial role in ureteric bud invasion during kidney development, and possibly in nephron progenitor cells in the metanephric mesenchyme. To gain insights into the Sall1 functions in the kidney and other tissues, we generated R26Sall1 mice, in which Rosa26 locus stop sequences flanked by two loxP sites were located upstream of the Sall1 cDNA.

A rod-shaped Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, aerobic and fucoidan-digesting strain, designated TC2(T), was isolated from marine algae collected from the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk at Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan. The bacterium formed yellow, translucent, circular and convex colonies. For the purpose of a nationwide surveillance of the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial respiratory pathogens in patients in Japan, the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy conducted their second year survey, during the period from January to August, 2007. A total of 1178 strains were collected from clinical specimens obtained from adult patients with well-diagnosed respiratory tract infections. Susceptibility testing was evaluable for 1108 strains (226 Staphylococcus aureus, 257 Streptococcus pneumoniae, 6 Streptococcus pyogenes, 206 Haemophilus influenzae, 120 Moraxella catarrhalis, 122 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 171 Pseudomonas aeruginosa).

Development of a bioartificial glomerulus, a hemofilter in which the inner surface of hollow fibers is endothelialized, requires expandable, nonimmunogenic, antithrombogenic, and highly permeable endothelial cells. We used human umbilical cord blood CD133(+) endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to evaluate the feasibility of application of EPCs for bioartificial glomerulus. Numbers of adhered CD133(+) EPCs (adhered EPCs) was approximately 25 to 30 times as great in the expansion culture group as in the non-expansion group.

Sall4 is a mouse homolog of a causative gene of the autosomal dominant disorder Okihiro syndrome. We previously showed that the absence of Sall4 leads to lethality during peri-implantation and that Sall4-null embryonic stem (ES) cells proliferate poorly with intact pluripotency when cultured on feeder cells. Here, we report that, in the absence of feeder cells, Sall4-null ES cells express the trophectoderm marker Cdx2, but are maintained for a long period in an undifferentiated state with minimally affected Oct3/4 expression.

Osteoclast development and maturation (osteoclastogenesis) is driven by receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand and macrophage-colony stimulating factor and invariably requires a signal initiated by immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM)-harboring Fc receptor common gamma chain or DNAX-activating protein (DAP)12 (also referred to as KARAP or TYROBP) that associates with the cognate immunoreceptors. To identify genes responsible for acetaldehyde tolerance, genome-wide screening was performed using a collection of haploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains deleted in single genes. The screen identified 49 genes whose deletion conferred acetaldehyde sensitivity, and these were termed the genes required for acetaldehyde tolerance. We focused on six of these genes required for acetaldehyde tolerance, ZWF1, GND1, RPE1, TKL1 and TAL1, which encode enzymes in the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), and OAR1, which encodes for NADPH-dependent 3-oxoacyl-(acyl-carrier-protein) reductase.

Objective: The effect of the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) signal through prostaglandin E receptor 2 (EP2) receptors on the repair of injured articular cartilage was investigated using a selective agonist for EP2.

Methods: Chondral and osteochondral defects were prepared on the rabbit femoral concave in both knee joints, and gelatin containing polylactic-co-glycolic acid microspheres conjugated with or without the EP2 agonist was placed nearby. Animals were sacrificed at 4 or 12 weeks post-operation, and regenerated cartilage tissues and subchondral structure remodeling were evaluated by histological scoring.
