3D liquid crystal elastomer (3D-LCE) foams are used to support long-term neuronal cultures for over 60 days. Sequential imaging shows that cell density remains relatively constant throughout the culture period while the number of cells per observational area increases. In a subset of samples, retinoic acid is used to stimulate extensive neuritic outgrowth and maturation of proliferated neurons within the LCEs, inducing a threefold increase in length with cells displaying morphologies indicative of mature neurons.

A retrospective examination of antisocial and risk-taking behaviours.

Engagement in antisocial and risk-taking behaviours is a recurring issue that has been associated with a range of negative outcomes for the individual, community, and society. This research explored factors that influenced engagement and co-occurring behaviours. Responses ( = 393) from an Australian sample who completed the Antisocial Engagement Questionnaire showed that the majority of the behaviours of interest were associated, indicating that engagement in one behaviour was associated with engagement in additional antisocial and risk-taking behaviours.

Methods: Trials were conducted in Boston, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Oakland, Philadelphia, and Seattle, with the Data Coordinating Center in Seattle, and were designed with standardized eligibility criteria and endpoints. Primary outcomes focused on vasomotor symptoms, sleep quality and insomnia symptoms, and vaginal symptoms.

The American Academy of Dermatology is modernizing its clinical practice guidelines to be more timely and easily interpretable, while decreasing the influence of conflicts of interest in guideline generation. The main changes include the transition from SORT to GRADE methodology and the requirement that nonconflicted members of the guideline work groups remain nonconflicted throughout the entire guidelines process.

Interaction between postmenopausal hormone therapy and diabetes on cataract.

Objective: We investigated whether postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) use interacts with diabetes, a risk factor for several age-related eye diseases.

Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of women involved in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging was performed. The random sample comprised of 15,320 community-dwelling women between ages 45 and 85 years old sampled from areas adjacent to 11 data collection centers across Canada.

Transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation of the SMC-selective blood pressure-associated gene, ARHGAP42.

We previously showed that ARHGAP42 is a smooth muscle cell (SMC)-selective, RhoA-specific GTPase activating protein that regulates blood pressure and that a minor allele single nucleotide variation within a DNAse hypersensitive regulatory element in intron1 (Int1DHS) increased ARHGAP42 expression by promoting serum response factor binding. The goal of the current study was to identify additional transcriptional and posttranscriptional mechanisms that control ARHGAP42 expression. Using deletion/mutation, gel shift, and chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments, we showed that recombination signal binding protein for immunoglobulin κ-J region (RBPJ) and TEA domain family member 1 (TEAD1) binding to a conserved core region was required for full IntDHS transcriptional activity.

A new approach for investigating the response of lipid membranes to electrocompression by coupling droplet mechanics and membrane biophysics.

A new method for quantifying lipid-lipid interactions within biomimetic membranes undergoing electrocompression is demonstrated by coupling droplet mechanics and membrane biophysics. The membrane properties are varied by altering the lipid packing through the introduction of cholesterol. Pendant drop tensiometry is used to measure the lipid monolayer tension at an oil-water interface.

Development of the influence, motivation, and patient activation in diabetes (IMPACT-D™) measure.

Aims: We sought to create a new research and clinical instrument -the Influence and Motivation for Patient ACTivation in Diabetes care (IMPACT-D™) - to measure the degree to which patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) value health and believe they can influence it.

Methods: Candidate items were generated via a literature review, expert opinion, and qualitative interviews and focus groups with T2DM patients in Chicago, IL and Chapel Hill, NC. Psychometric testing guided by item response theory was conducted among an online panel of 500 English-speaking adults with T2DM.

Improving the Accuracy of Newborn Weight Classification.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to improve the accuracy of newborn weight classification using a regional newborn growth reference (Olsen), an evidence-based method, to determine SGA, AGA and LGA in term infants compared to the current growth reference (Lubchenco).

Design: Quality improvement methods using Lewin's Change Theory guided the process.

Setting/local Problem: At an academic medical center term infants were evaluated for weight-for-gestational age using the Lubchenco growth reference as well as other growth references based on provider preference.

Age-Related Eye Disease and Cognitive Function: The Search for Mediators.

Purpose: Age-related eye disease may be associated with cognitive decline, but the scientific literature has not been consistent. Furthermore, no studies have been able to explain the relationship. Our objective was to assess whether older adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or glaucoma performed worse on 6 cognitive tests compared with older adults with normal vision and, if so, to understand why.

Objective: Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects African Americans. We adapted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Popular Opinion Leader model to implement an intervention tailored for African American individuals that leverages an academic-community partnership and community-based social networks to disseminate culturally appropriate lupus education.

Methods: Academic rheumatologists, social scientists, and researchers in Boston, MA and Chicago, IL partnered with local lupus support groups, community organizations, and churches in neighborhoods with higher proportions of African Americans to develop curriculum and recruit community leaders with and without lupus (Popular Opinion Leaders; POLs).

Assessing cancer center researcher and provider perspectives on patient engagement.

Participatory research approaches can help ensure research is culturally relevant and aligned with stakeholder priorities, but barriers exist between researchers and community stakeholders, particularly in communities of color. We developed a measurement tool for assessing oncology researcher and provider readiness to undertake patient-engaged research, and piloted this measurement tool among oncology researchers and providers at the hospital's cancer care center. A survey was developed by drawing from existing PCORI assessments as well as creating original questions, in an effort to develop an evidence-based survey tailored to this project.

These materials are commonly assembled using the droplet interface bilayer (DIB) technique, adhering droplets together into a network of lipid membranes. DIB structures may be functionalized to generate conductive pathways by enhancing the permeability of pre-selected membranes, a strategy inspired by nature.

Bloodstream Infection Due to a Maggot-infested Wound in a 54-Year-Old Male.

We report a case of bacteremia and sepsis, in the setting of lower limb wounds with maggot infestation. This is the first documented infection by this organism in the Australasia/Pacific region, identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid sequencing. Clinicians should be aware of this emerging pathogen.

Mechanistic Insights into β-Lactamase-Catalysed Carbapenem Degradation Through Product Characterisation.

β-Lactamases are a major threat to the clinical use of carbapenems, which are often antibiotics of last resort. Despite this, the reaction outcomes and mechanisms by which β-lactamases degrade carbapenems are still not fully understood. The carbapenem bicyclic core consists of a β-lactam ring fused to a pyrroline ring.

Community engagement in patient-centered outcomes research: Benefits, barriers, and measurement.

Introduction: This study employed the Delphi method, an exploratory method used for group consensus building, to determine the benefits and challenges associated with community engagement in patient-centered outcomes research.

Methods: A series of email surveys were sent to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)-funded researchers ( = 103) in New England. Consensus was achieved through gathering themes and engaging participants in ranking their level of agreement over three rounds.

Reduction in Length of Stay and Morphine Use for NAS With the "Eat, Sleep, Console" Method.

Objectives: To reduce average length of stay (ALOS) in infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) transferred to the inpatient floor from the mother-infant unit. Secondarily, we aimed to reduce morphine exposure in these infants.

Methods: Using quality improvement methodology, we redesigned our approach to NAS on the inpatient floor.
