Aims: This study explores the beliefs and practices of family medicine physicians regarding the use of nonconventional modalities for menopausal symptom management.

Methods: Anonymous self-administered questionnaires were distributed to faculty and residents from eight participating family medicine residency programs around Florida, with an overall response rate of 66% (212 respondents). The survey explored what physicians report about patterns of patient inquiries and their responses to patients' inquiries about nonconventional modalities for specific menopausal symptoms and what physicians' report on their advice to patients about using specific herbs and supplements for menopausal symptom relief.

An acetone:water (7:3) extract obtained from the leaves of Rumex obtusifolius was fractionated into procyanidin oligomer and polymer fractions using a linear gradient and a simple step method on Sephadex LH-20. The chemical characteristics of the procyanidin fractions were studied by 13C-NMR spectroscopy, acid-catalysed degradation in the presence of benzyl mercaptan, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) MS and electrospray ionisation (ESI) MS. The 13C-NMR showed that the polymer fraction consisted predominantly of procyanidin polymers, some with galloyl groups attached.

During eukaryotic mRNA transcription, the synthetic activity and mRNA processing factor interactions of RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) are regulated by phosphorylation of its carboxyl-terminal domain (CTD), with modification occurring primarily on serines 2 and 5 of the CTD. We previously showed that herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection rapidly triggers the loss of RNAP II forms bearing serine 2 phosphorylation (Ser-2P RNAP II). Here we show that the HSV-1 immediate-early (IE) protein ICP22 is responsible for this effect during the IE phase of infection.

We describe two patients with intracranial aneurysms who presented with isolated sixth nerve palsy. A 68-year-old woman with gradual onset of horizontal lateral diplopia was found to have a giant aneurysm at the junction of the petrous and cavernous portion of the internal carotid artery. A 58-year-old man presented with gradual onset of occipital pain followed by a sixth nerve palsy.

A fast method was developed to directly infuse raw plant extracts into a linear ion trap mass spectrometer, using the ion trap to isolate and fragment as many ions as possible from the extract. The full mass spectra can be analysed by multivariate statistics to determine discriminating ions, and the fragmentation data allows rapid classification or identification of these ions. The methodology was used to screen a wide range of strains of endophytic fungi in perennial ryegrass seeds for differences in metabolic profiles.

Object: The aim of this study was to analyze the therapeutic decision-making process and outcome in 100 consecutive patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) treated since the completion of the International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial (ISAT). All patients were evaluated and treated by a neurosurgeon with subspecialty training in both cerebrovascular and neuroendovascular surgery.

Objective: To develop and test the reliability and validity of the State Behavioral Scale for use in describing sedation/agitation levels in young intubated patients supported on mechanical ventilation.

Design: : In this prospective, psychometric evaluation, pairs of trained pediatric critical care nurse evaluators simultaneously and independently assessed a convenience sample of pediatric intensive care unit patients along eight state/behavioral dimensions and a numeric rating scale (NRS) of 0 (extremely sedated) to 10 (extremely agitated). The eight dimensions were derived from the sedation/agitation literature and expert opinion and included respiratory drive, response to ventilation, coughing, best response to stimulation, attentiveness to careprovider, tolerance to care, consolability, and movement after consoled, each with 3-5 levels.

Previous studies have shown that herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection alters the phosphorylation of the carboxyl-terminal domain (CTD) of RNA polymerase II (RNAP II), creating a new form of the enzyme known as RNAP II(I).
