Purpose: To comparatively evaluate transcrestal sinus floor elevation (tSFE) and lateral sinus floor elevation (lSFE) at sites with different residual bone heights (RBHs).

Materials And Methods: A re-analysis of data from a parallel-arm, randomized trial comparatively evaluating tSFE and lSFE was performed. Within each RBH interval (< 4 mm or ≥ 4 mm), tSFE and lSFE groups were compared for chair time, surgery-related costs, morbidity, and radiographic parameters (including the proportion of the implant surface in direct contact with the radiopaque area [totCON%]).

Background: Transverse deficiencies of the maxillary basal bone have been treated in adult patients using miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) therapy. However, the midpalatal suture's degree of ossification may affect the upper airway dimensions. This study compared the volumetric changes of the total upper, retropalatal, retroglossal airways, and the minimal transverse airway constriction after MARPE therapy in patients with midpalatal suture in the last stages of ossification.

Background: The identification of metastatic lymph nodes is one of the most important prognostic factors in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging has been successfully used in GI tumors to detect the lymphatic pathway and the sentinel lymph node (SLN), facilitating fluorescence image-guided surgery (FIGS) with the purpose to achieve a correct nodal staging. The aim of this study was to analyze the current results of NIRF SLN navigation and lymphography through data collected in the EURO-FIGS registry.

Orthotopic neobladder (ONB) reconstruction is a continent urinary diversion procedure increasingly used in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer following radical cystectomy (RC). It represents a valid alternative to the ileal duct in suitable patients who do not prefer a stoma and are motivated to undergo adequate training of the neobladder. Careful patient selection, taking into account the absolute and relative contraindications for ONB as well as an adequate recovery protocol after surgery are integral to the success of this procedure and the oncological and functional outcomes.

In the attempt to reduce the invasiveness of a transcrestal sinus floor elevation procedure, different aspects must be considered; that is, the minimization of intra- and postsurgery morbidity, the reduction of treatment time, and the simplification/elimination of the reconstructive technology. Within this context, a systematic literature search was performed for controlled clinical trials evaluating the impact of one or more of these aspects on transcrestal sinus floor elevation invasiveness. Nineteen articles (15 studies) were included.

Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the dreaded complications following surgery in the digestive tract. Near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging is a means to intraoperatively visualize anastomotic perfusion, facilitating fluorescence image-guided surgery (FIGS) with the purpose to reduce the incidence of AL. The aim of this study was to analyze the current practices and results of NIRF imaging of the anastomosis in digestive tract surgery through the EURO-FIGS registry.

Recently, Indocyanine Green (ICG)-enhanced fluorescence has been introduced in laparoscopic colorectal surgery to provide detailed anatomical informations. The aim of our study is the application of ICG imaging during laparoscopic colorectal resections: to assess anastomotic perfusion to reduce the risk of anastomotic leak, to facilitate vascular dissection when vascular anatomy of tumor site is unclear, and to identify ureter to prevent iatrogenic injury. After the transection, 5 ml of ICG solution is intravenously injected.

Anionic microemulsions (MEs) containing soya phosphatidylcholine, Tween-20, sodium oleate as surfactant, and cholesterol as oil phase were investigated as drug carriers for amphotericin B. Depending on the composition of the microemulsion, various structures, which differently interact with amphotericin B, can be formed. The nanostructured systems were characterized by photon correlation spectroscopy, rheological behavior, and polarized light microscopy.

Study Objectives: Although blood pressure during sleep and the difference in blood pressure between sleep and wakefulness carry prognostic information, little is known on their central neural mechanisms. Hypothalamic neurons releasing hypocretin (orexin) peptides control wake-sleep behavior and autonomic functions and are lost in narcolepsy-cataplexy. We investigated whether chronic lack of hypocretin signaling alters blood pressure during sleep.

Background: Harmonization of results allows a more effective utilization of laboratory tests; we verified the feasibility of harmonizing serum alkaline phosphatase results by two methods.

Methods: Patient sera (n=106) and candidate calibration materials (n=8) were analyzed by two methods, employing either diethanolamine (DEA) or 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) as phosphate-accepting buffers. Results for patient sera by the DEA method were recalculated, with either a commutable or a non-commutable calibration material, both with values assigned by the AMP method.

We describe a seven years follow-up of a high risk gastrointestinal stromal tumor in a Meckel's diverticulum in a 68-year-old man with abdominal pain and vomiting. The patient was operated in emergency for peritonitis due to perforation of small intestine and treated with imatinib mesylate. The metastatic progression of the disease demonstrated the value of prognostic indicators (mitotic rate >10/50 high power field, necrosis and 8 cm in maximum diameter) for assessing risk of aggressive behaviour.
