Far less common is the primary progressive form of MS, which involves the progression of neurological symptoms that gradually worsen with time.

Background: The use of quantitative human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as a tumor marker is widely accepted despite lack of FDA-approval for oncology. Providing guideline-recommended preventive cardiovascular care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women: exploring gender differences with a medical record review in primary health care.

Background: For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, the premature burden of cardiovascular disease is affecting their capacity to fulfil roles in society, and promote the health and wellbeing of future generations. In Australia, there is limited understanding of the difference in primary preventive cardiovascular care experienced by women, despite knowledge of sex and gender differentials in health profile and receipt of guideline-based acute care. This paper sought to explore the health profile and receipt of assessment and management of cardiovascular risk for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women accessing preventive primary health care, and investigate gender differentials.

Comparison between BNP and NT-proBNP in pediatric populations.

Background: B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are essential biomarkers for the evaluation of cardiac pathologies. However, pediatric reference intervals for BNP and NT-proBNP are not well defined and concordance between them in the evaluation of pediatric patients has been poorly described.

Methods: Paired BNP and NT-proBNP testing was performed on 311 specimens representing 175 pediatric patients.

The app-based COVID Symptom Study was launched in Sweden in April 2020 to contribute to real-time COVID-19 surveillance. We enrolled 143,531 study participants (≥18 years) who contributed 10.6 million daily symptom reports between April 29, 2020 and February 10, 2021.

A systematic review on assessment and management of preventive cardiovascular care in primary health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and men.

In promoting positive cardiovascular health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, there is a need to ensure provision of high-quality risk assessment and management in primary healthcare settings. There is some evidence of gender gaps for Australian women in the provision of cardiovascular risk assessment and management; however, there is little understanding of whether these gaps are also present for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. A mixed-method systematic review was utilised to synthesise existing evidence on the provision of assessment and management against guideline-recommended care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, and determine whether gender disparities in provision of care exist for this population.

However, there is no universal definition of minimum volume for a QNS specimen and little data is available addressing the impact of QNS / low volume specimens on turnaround time (TAT) and sample hemolysis. "Let them know it's okay to get help": Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Police Officers.

The following research used a paper and pencil survey to assess programming for mental health and wellness in 7742 law enforcement agencies throughout the United States. A total of 465 respondents provided data to two open-ended questions to share several types of programs and services that would be beneficial for agencies to support officers who experience job challenges or stress. The qualitative data was analyzed via constant-comparison method by two independent coders who engaged in several techniques to aid in trustworthiness.

Understanding culturally safe aged care from the perspectives of older Aboriginal Australians in rural and remote communities.

Issue Addressed: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples face challenges in accessing aged care and are less likely to use some services than their non-Indigenous counterparts. Culturally safe care is increasingly recognised as an enabler to improve access and quality of care. This study explored older Aboriginal peoples' perceptions and experience of culturally safe aged care.

How trees thrive in a dry climate: diurnal and seasonal hydrology and water relations in a riparian cottonwood grove.

In semi-arid ecoregions, trees are restricted to river valley floodplains where river water supplements the limited precipitation. To characterize the associated diurnal and seasonal dynamics in hydrology and water relations, we studied narrowleaf cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia) along a prairie river in Canada. From June through August, the shallow soil moisture was depleted but moisture remained higher above the alluvial groundwater table, which dropped to 2.

Cultural awareness training for dental students.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of a full-day workshop on increasing cultural awareness among incoming first-year (DDS-I) and post-doctoral (PGY-I) dental students at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Methods: The workshop focused on developing students' cultural awareness regarding dimensions of identity, recognition of power and privilege, importance of cross-cultural understanding and communication, and the role of self-reflection through direct teaching, interactive discussions, and reflective writing. A convenience sample of 83 DDS-I and 30 PGY-I students from the 2019 enrollment class were recruited.

Guselkumab induces robust reduction in acute phase proteins and type 17 effector cytokines in active psoriatic arthritis: results from phase 3 trials.

Objective: To investigate serum protein expression in participants with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and changes after guselkumab treatment.

Methods: Participants with PsA were treated with guselkumab or placebo in the DISCOVER-1 and DISCOVER-2 studies. Serum levels of acute phase reactants C reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) and inflammatory cytokines/chemokines were measured at weeks 0, 4 and 24 in 300 study participants and 34 healthy controls (HCs).

Detecting Fentanyl Analogs in Urine Using Precursor Ion Scan Mode.

The opioid crisis has led many providers to inquire about the capabilities of urine drug testing to detect contemporary compounds such as fentanyl and fentanyl analogs. However, current methods for clinical urine drug testing, including immunoassays and targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, are not designed to broadly screen for the variety of fentanyl analogs that may be encountered. In this proof-of-principle study we developed a precursor ion scan method to enable semi-targeted data acquisition for structurally related fentanyl analogs.

On the Basis of Race: The Utility of a Race Factor in Estimating Glomerular Filtration.

Background: Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a measure of the combined rate of filtration of all functional nephrons in the kidney. Measurement of GFR is used in the clinic to detect, stratify, and monitor progression of kidney dysfunction, and also serves as a prognostic tool for staging chronic kidney disease (CKD). The gold standard method for measuring GFR is by plasma or urine clearance of exogenous filtration markers, but this is not feasible in routine clinical practice.

Background: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' perspectives of health and cultural wellbeing encapsulate the spiritual, social and environmental health of individuals, their communities and country. Strategies designed to reduce the cardiovascular burden of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people often fail to consider their unique knowledge and worldview.

Methods: This adapted, grounded theory study sought to explore Aboriginal women's views of cardiovascular protective and risk factors.

Suppression of Serum Interferon-γ Levels as a Potential Measure of Response to Ustekinumab Treatment in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Objective: In a previously reported phase II randomized, placebo-controlled, interventional trial, we demonstrated that treatment with ustekinumab, an anti-interleukin-12 (IL-12)/IL-23 p40 neutralizing monoclonal antibody, improved global and organ-specific measures of disease activity in patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Utilizing the biomarker data from this phase II clinical study, we sought to determine whether modulation of the expression of IL-12, IL-23, or both cytokines by ustekinumab is associated with clinical efficacy in patients with SLE.

Methods: This phase II randomized, placebo-controlled study enrolled 102 patients with autoantibody-positive SLE whose disease remained active despite standard-of-care therapy.

Association between SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibodies and Commercial Serological Assays.

Background: Commercially available SARS-CoV-2 serological assays based on different viral antigens have been approved for the qualitative determination of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. However, there are limited published data associating the results from commercial assays with neutralizing antibodies.

Methods: Sixty-six specimens from 48 patients with PCR-confirmed COVID-19 and a positive result by the Roche Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2, Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG, or EUROIMMUN SARS-CoV-2 IgG assays and 5 control specimens were analyzed for the presence of neutralizing antibodies to SARS-CoV-2.

Background: Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid associated with illicit drug use and overdose deaths. The SEFRIA Immunalysis (IAL) and ARK fentanyl assays are both FDA-cleared, open channel immunoassays for fentanyl detection in urine. However, limited data are available in the literature comparing these assays.

A Comparison of Four 3-Axis-Accelerometers for Monitoring Hospital Pneumatic Tube Systems.

Background: Validation of hospital pneumatic tube systems (PTS) is recommended to predict and prevent errors caused by sample hemolysis. 3-Axis accelerometer dataloggers have been successfully implemented as tools for PTS validation, but the most suitable device for such validation has not been investigated.
