In our society, state governments have the major role in regulating physician behavior and actions related to end-of-life decision making. However, in the current confusing and conflicted legal environment, how well are state governments doing with this serious responsibility? The authors of this article report the results of the first statewide survey of Louisiana physicians regarding their knowledge of and compliance with specific parts of one state government's attempt to regulate end-of-life decision making: the Louisiana Natural Death Act (LNDA). Physician respondents were asked to indicate their level of familiarity with the LNDA and several questions examined physician compliance with specific sections contained in the statute.

Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) is a protein marker for caveolae organelles, and acts as a scaffolding protein to negatively regulate the activity of signaling molecules by binding to and releasing them in a timely fashion. We have previously shown that loss of Cav-1 promotes the proliferation of mouse embryo fibroblasts (MEFs) in vitro. Caveolae are plasma membrane invaginations that function as important regulators of numerous cellular processes, including signal transduction, cholesterol trafficking, and endocytosis. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) constitutes the main structural protein of caveolae membranes. Here, we report an in vivo increase in the number of apoptotic cells in the thymus and spleen of Cav-1 deficient mice, following whole-body gamma-irradiation.

We have developed a pooled ORF expression technology, POET, that uses recombinational cloning and proteomic methods (two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry) to identify ORFs that when expressed are likely to yield high levels of soluble, purified protein. Because the method works on pools of ORFs, the procedures needed to subclone, express, purify, and assay protein expression for hundreds of clones are greatly simplified. Small scale expression and purification of 12 positive clones identified by POET from a pool of 688 Caenorhabditis elegans ORFs expressed in Escherichia coli yielded on average 6 times as much protein as 12 negative clones.

Previous evaluative studies of the glucose method's efficacy have lacked adequate statistical power and a gold standard for aspiration. Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) is the primary structural component of caveolae and is implicated in the processes of vesicular transport, cholesterol balance, transformation, and tumorigenesis. Despite an abundance of data suggesting that Cav-1 has transformation suppressor properties both in vitro and in vivo, Cav-1 is expressed at increased levels in human prostate cancer. Secretion of a recombinant protein from the yeast Pichia pastoris requires the presence of a signal peptide at the amino terminus. Maintaining the full amino acid sequence of the signal peptide is thought to be important for proper signal processing and protein secretion. We show that at least for one protein, a synthetic human interferon, the presence of a Gateway recombination site within the signal peptide is fully compatible with high levels of protein secretion.

Subarachnoid-pleural fistula is a rare occurrence in humans as a result of trauma or spinal surgery. Such fistulas commonly remain undiagnosed until sufficient cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the pleural space to cause respiratory distress. We describe a subarachnoid-pleural fistula in a dog that occurred subsequent to blunt trauma sustained during a fall, with concurrent acute, traumatic intervertebral disc rupture.

It is generally well accepted that caveolin-3 expression is muscle specific, whereas caveolin-1 and -2 are coexpressed in a variety of cell types, including adipocytes, endothelial cells, epithelial cells, and fibroblasts. Caveolin-1 and -2 are known to form functional hetero-oligomeric complexes in cells where they are coexpressed, whereas caveolin-3 forms homo-oligomeric high molecular mass complexes. Although caveolin-2 might be expected to interact in a similar manner with caveolin-3, most studies indicate that this is not the case.

A 22-month-old castrated male ferret developed acute pelvic limb paresis. Radiographs and computed tomography revealed a soft tissue mass with associated bony lysis of L5, and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirates suggested that it was a lymphoma. Treatment with prednisone at immunosuppressive doses did not produce any detectable improvement in the ferret's clinical signs and it became moribund less than two weeks after they developed.
