Peptide amphiphiles (PAs) are highly tunable molecules that were recently found to exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) when they self-assemble into nanofibers. Here, we leverage decades of molecular design and self-assembly study of PAs to strategically tune their molecular motion within nanofibers to enhance AIE, making them a highly useful platform for applications such as sensing, bioimaging, or materials property characterization. Since AIE increases when aggregated molecules are rigidly and closely packed, we altered the four most closely packed amino acids nearest to the hydrophobic core by varying the order and composition of glycine, alanine, and valine pairs.

Although peptide amphiphile micelles (PAMs) have been widely studied since they were developed in the late 1990s, to the author's knowledge, there have been no reports that PAMs intrinsically fluoresce without a fluorescent tag, according to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. This unexpected fluorescence behavior adds noteworthy value to both the peptide amphiphile and AIE communities. For PAMs, intrinsic fluorescence becomes another highly useful feature to add to this well-studied material platform that features precise synthetic control, tunable self-assembly, and straightforward functionalization, with clear potential applications in bioinspired materials for bioimaging and fluorescent sensing.

Establishing commensal dysbiosis, defined as an inflammatory gut microbiome with low biodiversity, before breast tumor initiation, enhances early dissemination of hormone receptor-positive (HR+) mammary tumor cells. Here, we sought to determine whether cellular changes occurring in normal mammary tissues, before tumor initiation and in response to dysbiosis, enhanced dissemination of HR+ tumors. Commensal dysbiosis increased both the frequency and profibrogenicity of mast cells in normal, non-tumor-bearing mammary tissues, a phenotypic change that persisted after tumor implantation.

We present the case of a tracheal injury that occurred during a Maze procedure performed via sternotomy that was not initially detected by ventilator air leak, but rather by the visual presence of gas bubbles escaping the trachea during chest irrigation. Careful investigation and machine check did reveal a subsequent air leak that would have otherwise been overlooked. Furthermore, the use of intraoperative bronchoscopy was essential in guiding and confirming surgical repair.

Unlabelled: COVID-19 has resulted in the deferral of major surgery for genitourinary (GU) cancers with the exception of cancers with a high risk of progression. We report outcomes for major GU cancer operations, namely radical prostatectomy (RP), radical cystectomy (RC), radical nephrectomy (RN), partial nephrectomy (PN), and nephroureterectomy performed at 13 major GU cancer centres across the UK between March 1 and May 5, 2020. Objectives: Using stored plasma, we conducted a study to assess the ability of Xpert VL to quantify viral load relative to the Roche COBAS AmpliPrep/COBAS TaqMan HIV-1 (Cobas VL) and to examine the use of the Xpert VL as a qualitative diagnostic test.

Integrin β3 is seen as a key anti-angiogenic target for cancer treatment due to its expression on neovasculature, but the role it plays in the process is complex; whether it is pro- or anti-angiogenic depends on the context in which it is expressed. To understand precisely β3's role in regulating integrin adhesion complexes in endothelial cells, we characterised, by mass spectrometry, the β3-dependent adhesome. We show that depletion of β3-integrin in this cell type leads to changes in microtubule behaviour that control cell migration.

The introduction of a large concentration of H into VO2 is known to suppress the insulating phase of the metal-insulator transition that occurs upon cooling below 340 K. We have used infrared spectroscopy and complementary theory to study the properties of interstitial H and D in VO2 in the dilute limit to determine the vibrational frequencies, thermal stabilities, and equilibrium positions of isolated interstitial H and D centers. The vibrational lines of several OH and OD centers were observed to have thermal stabilities similar to that of the hydrogen that suppresses the insulating phase.
