Language has been used as a privileged window to investigate mental processes. More recently, descriptions of psychopathological symptoms have been analyzed with the help of natural language processing tools. An example is the study of speech organization using graph theoretical approaches that began approximately 10 years ago.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLanguage experience shapes the gradual maturation of speech production in both native (L1) and second (L2) languages. Structural aspects like the connectedness of spontaneous narratives reveal this maturation progress in L1 acquisition and, as it does not rely on semantics, it could also reveal structural pattern changes during L2 acquisition. The current study tested whether L2 lexical retrieval associated with vocabulary knowledge could impact the global connectedness of narratives during the initial stages of L2 acquisition.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of 243 people with a BMI of at least 25 and aged from 18 to 60 years old. The following instruments were used: Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQ-II), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-Weight (AAQ-W), Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ), Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ-7), Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire-Body Image (CFQ-BI), Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ), Binge Eating Scale (BES) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21).
The overall goal of this study was to assess the efficacy of various therapeutic combinations of estradiol cypionate (ECP, a long-acting estrogen) and altrenogest (ALT, a long-acting progestin) in addition to basic treatment for placentitis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMS) and flunixin meglumine (FM). Specific outcomes measured in this experiment were (i) time from induction of bacterial placentitis to delivery, and foal parameters (high-risk, survival, and birth weight); and (ii) serum steroid concentrations (progesterone, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, 17β-estradiol, and cortisol) in response to treatment. Pregnant mares (∼300 days gestation, n = 46) were randomly assigned into healthy mares (control group, CONT, n = 8) and mares with experimentally induced ascending placentitis (n = 38).

The fabrication of milled complete dental prostheses with digital scanning technology may decrease the number of appointments. The step-by-step method necessary to obtain impressions, maxillomandibular relation records, and anterior tooth position with an anatomic measuring device is described.

Cross-linking methods have been developed to address the disadvantages of the rapid degradation associated with collagen-based scaffolds. To eliminate the potential drawbacks associated with glutaraldehyde cross-linking, methods using a water soluble carbodiimide have been developed.

However, it is important to then retain what has been attained, even in the absence of continued exposure to the L2--particularly since periods of minimal or no L2 exposure are common. This event-related potential (ERP) study of an artificial language tested performance and neural processing following a substantial period of no exposure.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn previous work, we have demonstrated by radiolabeling, mass spectrometry and site-directed mutagenesis that nerve growth factor (NGF) as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) are capable of ATP-binding and that this binding appears to be essential for their neuroprotective activity. In this study, we attempted to shed some light on the question whether ATP is a general prerequisite for neuroprotection. Therefore, we used the non-ATP-binding granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF), the calcium antagonist nimodipine and the NMDA antagonist dizocilpine to find out whether they need ATP for neuroprotection comparable to NGF and BDNF.

Stabilization of fibroblast growth factors from heat denaturation and proteolytic digestion by bound heparin and heparan sulphate proteoglycans is known for more than 20 years. Furthermore, ATP-binding to FGF2 also leads to stabilization of this growth factor as discovered recently. The physiological importance of this protection is not yet clear but has become the focal point of interest.

The absolute brightness, defined as the ratio of radiant intensity of emission to illumination intensity of excitation, of nile-red fluorescent microspheres with a 1 micrometre diameter is measured to be 4.2 +/- 1 x 10(-16) m(2)/sr, and the implications for the design of kinesin motor protein-powered "smart dust" devices and the remote detection of fluorescence are discussed.

The postsynaptic component Dendrin that is encoded by a dendritically localized mRNA is thought to modulate the structure of the synaptic cytoskeleton. However, molecular mechanisms that control extrasomatic Dendrin mRNA transport and postsynaptic protein recruitment are unknown.

Methods: The literature is reviewed concerning the rationale for splinting teeth and reports concerning the efficacy of splinting implants together. Based on this team's experience with a prospective series of consecutive 2 to 5 unit provisionalization cases, guidelines are included with case examples for understanding the technique.
An implant-retained overdenture retained with 2 implants placed in the anterior edentulous mandible is a simple and predictable treatment option. The fabrication and use of this prosthesis requires satisfactory interarch space for adequate denture base thickness and esthetics. This clinical report describes the use of low-profile attachments for this overdenture design to solve the problem of limited interarch space.

Statement Of Problem: There is insufficient knowledge of the strength of all-ceramic crowns bonded to natural teeth to warrant the use of all-ceramic crowns in place of metal-ceramic crowns.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare fracture resistance of crowns made of 3 different types of 2 all-ceramic crown systems-0.4-mm and 0.
Prosthetic and surgical procedures can be applied to rehabilitate acquired palatal defects. Distraction osteogenesis may be used to narrow the defect to facilitate bone and soft tissue closure. This clinical report describes a multidisciplinary approach to the closure of a palatal defect with distraction osteogenesis, comprehensive orthodontic treatment, surgical soft tissue flap reconstruction of the residual soft tissue defect, implant placement in the newly created edentulous ridge, and restoration with an implant-supported prosthesis.

Purpose: Patients desire efficient restoration of missing teeth. Immediate provisionalization of implants at the time of placement can provide the patient with a tooth-like restoration. Our hypothesis is that preoperative fabrication of the implant abutment and provisional restoration can provide successful immediate provisionalization of implants, if specific diagnostic criteria are used for patient selection.

Under the primary utilisation of phytosanitary production factors such as selection of variety, crop rotation and N fertilisation according to plant requirements, the IPM Wheat Model comprises the elements diagnosis (qualitative = type of pathogen, quantitative = disease severity), scientifically grounded treatment thresholds which, as critical values in pathogen development, can be applied to define the optimum time of fungicide application, and pathogen-specific effective fungicides and application amounts. This leads to the location and year-specific optimised control of the pathogen and of the associated yield performance. After several years of development in Bavaria (from 1985 on) and Schleswig-Holstein (1993-1999), the model was tested as part of a project involving the Universities of Bonn and Kiel and the plant protection services of the German states of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein in a three-year study (1999-2001) in interregional locations (usually nine per state) with the winter wheat variety Ritmo (interregional indicator variety) and a further variety of regional importance in different variations (untreated control, three to four times growth stage-oriented variants for the determination of the absolute damage potential, IPM-variant).
