Juvenile angiofibroma is a benign fibroangiomatous tumor of relatively rare occurrence, developing most frequently in male adolescents. It has local characteristics of aggressiveness and expansion. The treatment of choice is surgical excision.

Evaluation of pulmonary function in patients submitted to reduction mammaplasty.

Objective: To prospectively evaluate the pulmonary function in patients undergoing reduction mammaplasty.

Methods: Twelve female patients with Gigantomastia and without medical antecedents were submitted to reduction mammaplasty at our University Hospital. The patients underwent lung function testing and arterial blood gas measurements in the preoperative and postoperative period (three to six months).

Genetic diversity of turmeric germplasm (Curcuma longa; Zingiberaceae) identified by microsatellite markers.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a triploid, vegetatively propagated crop introduced early during the colonization of Brazil. Turmeric rhizomes are ground into a powder used as a natural dye in the food industry, although recent research suggests a greater potential for the development of drugs and cosmetics. In Brazil, little is known about the genetic variability available for crop improvement.

Drainage kinetics of nanochannels fabricated in water films a few molecules thick on mica at room temperature.

Nanochannels of the order of 20 nm in diameter and forming arrangements that were a few micrometres wide were fabricated on nanometre-thick ice-like deposits on planar mica surfaces at room temperature. Because an atomic force microscopy tip can write lines on ice-like layers covering mica substrates in air that are stable under invariant conditions of humidity and temperature, the water films were modulated with nanochannels. By analysing the shape and morphology of the material removed after channel fabrication for various time intervals, the channel profile was shown to vary with a scale of a tenth of a second.

Granulomatous meningoencephalitis due to toxoplasma gondii in a black-headed night monkey (Aotus nigriceps).

This report describes toxoplasmosis infection in a black-headed night monkey (Aotus nigriceps) from the Zoological Park of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The animal was submitted alive to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso presenting neurologic clinical signs. There were no improvements on the animal's clinical condition after treatment, so it was euthanized.

Synthesis and anticancer activities of some novel 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-8-substituted-2H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3(5H)-ones.

A series of 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-8-substituted-2H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3(5H)-ones (3a-g) have been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activities against four human cancer cell lines: MDA-MB-435 (breast), HL-60 (leukemia), HCT-8 (colon) and SF-295 (central nervous system). The results showed that the compounds 3b (2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-8-methyl-2H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3(5H)-one) and 3c (2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-8-bromo-2H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinolin-3(5H)-one) exhibited good cytotoxicity for three cell lines with IC(50) values lower than 5 μg/mL. Analysis of theoretical toxicity risks have shown medium tumorigenic and irritant risks related to 3b and 3c in contrast to doxorubicin, the positive control.

Physical-chemical parameters and validation of a colorimetric method for deoxycholic and ursodeoxycholic acids: kit reagent and optical sensor.

The simple and low cost β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-phenolphthalein (PHP) inclusion complex was used for both the study of physical-chemical parameters and validation of analytical procedures for deoxycholic acid (DCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) determinations in different formulations. The usefulness of this inclusion complex is proposed either in the form of kit reagent and as an original optical sensor for DCA and UDCA. The results showed that temperature had a negative effect on the equilibrium constant resulting in high negative values of enthalpy and positive values of entropy.

Isolated intra-oral granular cell tumor: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a relatively uncommon lesion occurring in almost any part of the body, including the orofacial region. The tongue and the buccal mucosa are common intra oral sites. Although aggressive and malignant variants of this neoplasm have been described, most GCTs are benign.

Pedicled sensate composite calcaneal flap to achieve full weight-bearing surface in midshaft leg amputations: case report.

Of the possible levels of amputation, transtibial amputations result in functionally excellent outcomes. However, in contrast to hind foot amputations, such as Syme and especially Boyd amputation, acute or late complications related to the amputated stump are frequent with the various described techniques. Novel platinum(II) complexes of 3-(aminomethyl)naphthoquinone Mannich bases: synthesis, crystal structure and cytotoxic activities.

The first examples of platinum(II) complexes of 3-(aminomethyl)naphthoquinone Mannich bases have been synthesised and their crystal structures are described. Neutral and charged complexes have been obtained, fully characterised and their cytotoxic activities have also been investigated. 3-[(R(1)-amino)(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]-2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones (R(1) = n-Bu, HL1; Bn, HL2; furfuryl, HL3; n-heptyl, HL4 and n-decyl, HL5) coordinate to platinum(II) through the two nitrogen atoms.

Effect of platelet-rich plasma on peri-implant bone repair: a histologic study in dogs.

The present study evaluated the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on peri-implant bone healing. A total of 9 mongrel dogs received 36 dental implants with sandblasted acid-etched surface in lower jaws in a split-mouth design: in the PRP group (n=18 implants) the implants were placed in association with PRP, and in the control group (n=18 implants) the implants were placed without PRP. Biopsies were obtained and prepared for histologic and histometric analysis after 15, 30, and 55 days of healing.

Correlation between quality of life and functional capacity in cardiac failure.

Background: Patients with cardiac failure (CF) present progressive incapacity and decreased quality of life, both related to dyspnea and fatigue. Thus, there is the increasing interest in measuring the quality of life (QL), by generic instrument, such as the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), by specific instrument, such as Minnesota Living with Heart Failure (MLHFQ).

Objective: This study has the objective to correlate the QL surveys, SF-36 and MLHFQ, with the functional capacity of patients with CF, expressed by the cardiopulmonary test and the TC6M.

Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of 7-hydroxycoumarin in experimental animal models: potential therapeutic for the control of inflammatory chronic pain.

Objectives: In the present study we investigated the antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects of 7-hydroxycoumarin (7-HC) in animal models.

Methods: The effects of oral 7-HC were tested against acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin test, tail flick test, complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced hypernociception, carrageenan-induced paw oedema, lipopolysaccharide-induced fever and the rota rod test.

Key Findings: 7-HC (3-60 mg/kg) produced a dose-related antinociception against acetic acid-induced writhing in mice and in the formalin test.

Transducer loading effect on the performance of PZT-based SHM systems.

In the last years, the piezoelectric transducers of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) have been widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) systems based on the electromechanical (E/M) impedance technique. Although many studies indicate the successful use of PZT in damage detection, some practical considerations still have to be considered in real applications. In this work, the effect of the transducer loading caused by mechanical impedance of the host structure is analyzed using an equivalent electromechanical circuit.

Second salvage surgery for re-recurrent oral cavity and oropharynx carcinoma.

Background: Salvage surgery is considered the best treatment approach for patients with recurrent oral carcinoma. Unfortunately, 50% to 60% of the patients who undergo salvage surgery will develop further locoregional recurrence, and they are not usually considered for further treatment. Our aim in this study was to report our experience with a second salvage surgery for selected patients with re-recurrent oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Phylogenetic relationships among species of Lutzomyia, subgenus Lutzomyia (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Lutzomyia França is the largest and most diverse sand fly genus in the New World and contains all the species involved in the transmission of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL). Morphological characters were used to test the monophyly and to infer phylogenetic relationships among members of the Lutzomyia subgenus. Fifty-two morphological characters from male and female adult specimens belonging to 18 species of Lu.

Antiviral activity of Solanum paniculatum extract and constituents.

Solanum species are traditionally employed as antiherpes and anticancer agents in different countries. S. paniculatum has widespread ethnomedical uses in Brazil, including the treatment of viral infections.

The antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of Piptadenia stipulacea Benth. (Fabaceae).

Aim: In this study, we attempted to identify the possible antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory actions of the aqueous phase, the ethyl acetate phase and one unknown flavonoid obtained from aerial parts of Piptadenia stipulacea, known in Brazil as "jurema-branca", "carcará" and "rasga-beiço".

Materials And Methods: Aerial parts of Piptadenia stipulacea were used and after fractionation, the flavonoid FGAL was obtained. Experiments were conducted on Swiss mice using the acetic acid-induced writhing test, the hot plate test, the formalin-induced pain test and zymosan A-induced peritonitis test.

We sought to establish normative data for three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) first-trimester embryonic volume using the extended imaging virtual organ computer-aided analysis (XI VOCAL) technique. This cross-sectional study involved 64 normal pregnancies at 7 to 10 + 6 weeks' gestation. Embryonic volume was obtained on 3DUS using the XI VOCAL technique with manual outline of 10 sequential planes.

Comparison of gestational sac volume by 3D-sonography using planimetric, virtual organ computer-aided analysis and extended imaging virtual organ computer-aided analysis methods between 7 and 11 weeks of pregnancy.

Design: Cross-sectional study involving 74 normal pregnancies between 7 and 11 weeks.
