We present the fictional case of a 29-year-old man with sickle cell disease referred to psychiatry for evaluation of depression during an acute pain episode. Consultation-liaison psychiatrists with expertise in sickle cell disease provide guidance for this commonly encountered clinical case based on their experience and a review of the available literature. Key teaching points include the high prevalence of mood and cognitive disorders in this population, as well as pertinent issues related to chronic pain, opioids, and stigma.

The exploration of protein structure and function stands at the forefront of life science and represents an ever-expanding focus in the development of proteomics. As mass spectrometry (MS) offers readout of protein conformational changes at both the protein and peptide levels, MS-based structural proteomics is making significant strides in the realms of structural and molecular biology, complementing traditional structural biology techniques. This review focuses on two powerful MS-based techniques for peptide-level readout, namely limited proteolysis-mass spectrometry (LiP-MS) and cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS).

Endogenous peptides are an abundant and versatile class of biomolecules with vital roles pertinent to the functionality of the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems and others. Mass spectrometry stands as a premier technique for identifying endogenous peptides, yet the field still faces challenges due to the lack of optimized computational resources for reliable raw mass spectra analysis and interpretation. Current database searching programs can exhibit discrepancies due to the unique properties of endogenous peptides, which typically require specialized search considerations.

Design: A cross-sectional survey design.
Methods: An online survey was sent to Australian and New Zealand nursing and midwifery educators across the 45 Schools of Nursing and Midwifery between July and September 2023.
Aim: To achieve consensus on the knowledge and skills that undergraduate/pre-licensure nursing students require to steward healthcare towards a more sustainable future.
Design: A two-phase real-time Delphi study.
Methods: Phase 1 included the generation of Planetary Health, climate change and sustainability knowledge and skill statements based on a review of relevant literature.
Background: With an international nursing shortage, there is a need to navigate towards an improved nursing workforce structure where each nursing role is valued and recognised for the work they contribute. The second-level regulated nursing role is seen as integral; however, there is role confusion, especially with the registered nurse, and high attrition. To implement strategies to retain an integral nursing workforce, there is a need to better understand the role from the experiences and expectations of the second-level regulated nursing role.

Yet, few practical examples of nurse leadership in the health sector's response to climate change are evident in the scholarly literature.
Aim: The aim of this discussion paper is to profile Australian nurses who are leading initiatives designed to champion planetary health and promote sustainable practice.
Crustaceans serve as a useful, simplified model for studying peptides and neuromodulation, as they contain numerous neuropeptide homologs to mammals and enable electrophysiological studies at the single-cell and neural circuit levels. Crustaceans contain well-defined neural networks, including the stomatogastric ganglion, oesophageal ganglion, commissural ganglia, and several neuropeptide-rich organs such as the brain, pericardial organs, and sinus glands. As existing mass spectrometry (MS) methods are not readily amenable to neuropeptide studies, there is a great need for optimized sample preparation, data acquisition, and data analysis methods.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFMINERvA has measured the ν_{μ}-induced coherent π^{+} cross section simultaneously in hydrocarbon (CH), graphite (C), iron (Fe), and lead (Pb) targets using neutrinos from 2 to 20 GeV. The measurements exceed the predictions of the Rein-Sehgal and Berger-Sehgal PCAC based models at multi-GeV ν_{μ} energies and at produced π^{+} energies and angles, E_{π}>1 GeV and θ_{π}<10°. Measurements of the cross-section ratios of Fe and Pb relative to CH reveal the effective A scaling to increase from an approximate A^{1/3} scaling at few GeV to an A^{2/3} scaling for E_{ν}>10 GeV.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNeutrino-induced charged-current single π^{+} production in the Δ(1232) resonance region is of considerable interest to accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. In this Letter, high statistic differential cross sections are reported for the semiexclusive reaction ν_{μ}A→μ^{-}π^{+}+ nucleon(s) on scintillator, carbon, water, iron, and lead targets recorded by MINERvA using a wideband ν_{μ} beam with ⟨E_{ν}⟩≈6 GeV. Suppression of the cross section at low Q^{2} and enhancement of low T_{π} are observed in both light and heavy nuclear targets compared with phenomenological models used in current neutrino interaction generators.

Arginine methylation catalyzed by protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) is a prevalent post-translational modification (PTM) that regulates diverse cellular processes. Aberrant expression of type I PRMTs that catalyze asymmetric arginine dimethylation (ADMA) is often found in cancer, though little is known about the ADMA status of substrate proteins in tumors. Using LC-MS/MS along with pan-specific ADMA antibodies, we performed global mapping of ADMA in five patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumors representing different subtypes of human breast cancer.

To establish an effective workflow enabling quantitative analysis of changes in protein conformation within multiple samples simultaneously, here we report the combination of -dimethyl leucine (DiLeu) isobaric tag labeling with limited proteolysis mass spectrometry (DiLeu-LiP-MS) for high-throughput structural protein quantitation in serum samples collected from AD patients and control donors. Twenty-three proteins were discovered to undergo structural changes, mapping to 35 unique conformotypic peptides with significant changes between the AD group and the control group.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis Letter presents the first simultaneous measurement of the quasielasticlike neutrino-nucleus cross sections on C, water, Fe, Pb, and scintillator (hydrocarbon or CH) as a function of longitudinal and transverse muon momentum. The ratio of cross sections per nucleon between Pb and CH is always above unity and has a characteristic shape as a function of transverse muon momentum that evolves slowly as a function of longitudinal muon momentum. The ratio is constant versus longitudinal momentum within uncertainties above a longitudinal momentum of 4.
