Therefore, it is emerging that in addition to sequence even the structure adopted by mature miRNAs might play an important role to reach the target.

In the marine environment, most solid surfaces are covered by microbial biofilms, mainly composed of bacteria and diatoms. The negative effects of biofilms on materials and equipment are numerous and pose a major problem for industry and human activities. Since marine micro-organisms are an important source of bioactive metabolites, it is possible that they synthesize natural ecofriendly molecules that inhibit the adhesion of organisms.

Background: S-nitrosylation (SNO), a prototypic redox-based posttranslational modification, is involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to determine the role of SNO of MLP (muscle LIM protein) in myocardial hypertrophy, as well as the mechanism by which SNO-MLP modulates hypertrophic growth in response to pressure overload.

Methods: Myocardial samples from patients and animal models exhibiting myocardial hypertrophy were examined for SNO-MLP level using biotin-switch methods.

Background: E-cadherin has been awarded a key role in the aetiology of both sporadic and hereditary forms of gastric cancer. In this study, we aimed to identify molecular interactors that influence the expression and function of E-cadherin associated to cancer.

Methods: A data mining approach was used to predict stomach-specific candidate genes, uncovering S100P as a key candidate.

Methods: The ShortHER trial randomized 1253 HER2-positive patients to 9 weeks or 1 year of adjuvant trastuzumab combined with chemotherapy.

Next-generation sequencing is increasing our understanding and knowledge of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), elucidating their roles in molecular mechanisms and processes such as cell growth and development. Within such a class, tRNA-derived ncRNAs have been recently associated with gene expression regulation in cancer progression. In this paper, we characterize, for the first time, tRNA-derived ncRNAs in NCI-60.

Acute kidney injury as the presenting complaint of ceftazidime-induced immune-mediated haemolysis.

We present the case of ceftazidime-induced immune-mediated haemolysis with associated acute kidney injury in a 43-year-old woman. The patient initially presented to the regional cystic fibrosis centre for treatment of an infective exacerbation of cystic fibrosis. After initiation of ceftazidime (a third-generation cephalosporin), renal function rapidly deteriorated and a fall in haemoglobin was noted.

Innovative Trends in Implant Dentistry Training and Education: A Narrative Review.

Background: The field of implant dentistry education is rapidly evolving as new technologies permit innovative methods to teach the fundamentals of implant dentistry.

Methods: Literature from the fields of active learning, blended learning, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, haptics, and mixed reality were reviewed and combined with the experience and opinions of expert authors. Both positive and negative aspects of the learning methods are presented.

Prospective cohort study of early biosignatures of response to lithium in bipolar-I-disorders: overview of the H2020-funded R-LiNK initiative.

Background: Lithium is recommended as a first line treatment for bipolar disorders. However, only 30% of patients show an optimal outcome and variability in lithium response and tolerability is poorly understood. It remains difficult for clinicians to reliably predict which patients will benefit without recourse to a lengthy treatment trial.

An innovative academic-practice partnership to enhance the development and training of military nurses.

Academic-practice partnerships have been identified by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing as a best practice for advancing the profession of nursing in a collaborative manner by sharing goals, knowledge, and respect in a mutually beneficial line of effort. Training military nurses poses a unique challenge to academia and military nurse corps to produce competent nursing professionals who are also effective military officers. The academic-practice partnership between the United States Army Cadet Command's ROTC program and the University of San Francisco's School of Nursing is a prime example of such a partnership.

Maximum velocity during loaded countermovement jumps obtained with an accelerometer, linear encoder and force platform: A comparison of technologies.

The maximum velocity (Vmax) reached during countermovement jumps (CMJ) has been considered a performance indicator to evaluate vertical jump ability. The aim of this study was to compare Vmax during loaded CMJ (CMJloaded) using three different technologies to show a criterion for selecting the more appropriate depending on its use. Nine recreationally active men performed a CMJloaded test.

Diagnosis and Management of Left Atrium Appendage Thrombosis in Atrial Fibrillation Patients Undergoing Cardioversion.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with an increased risk of stroke and thromboembolic complications. A rhythm control strategy with both electrical and pharmacological cardioversion is recommended for patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation. Anticoagulant therapy for 3-4 weeks prior to cardioversion is recommended in order to avoid thromboembolic events deriving from restoring sinus rhythm.

Exogenous application of rosmarinic acid improves saccharification without affecting growth and lignification of maize.

Biomimetically incorporated into the lignin structure, rosmarinic acid improves in vitro maize cell wall saccharification; however, no in planta studies have been performed. We hypothesized that rosmarinic acid, itself, could inducer saccharification without disturbing plant growth. Its effects on growth, enzymes of the phenylpropanoid pathway, lignin, monomeric composition, and saccharification of maize were evaluated.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Some noninvasive techniques have been used to quantify liver fat, such as the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). To evaluate CAP as a tool to identify liver steatosis and its relationship with different clinical and biochemical metabolic parameters in a group of patients with severe adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD), and to compare the evolution of metabolic profiles after 6 months of human growth hormone (rhGH) replacement therapy in a subgroup of patients.

Applying Non-Homogeneous Dose Optimization to Improve Conventionally Fractionated Radiation Plan Quality in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Purpose: Nonhomogeneous dose optimization (NHDO) is exploited in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to increase dose delivery to the tumor and allow rapid dose falloff to surrounding normal tissues. We investigate changes in plan quality when NHDO is applied to inverse-planned conventionally fractionated radiation therapy (CF-RT) plans in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Methods And Materials: Patients with near-central non-small cell lung cancer treated with CF-RT in 2018 at a single institution were identified.

Exploring the role of interdisciplinarity in physics: Success, talent and luck.

Although interdisciplinarity is often touted as a necessity for modern research, the evidence on the relative impact of sectorial versus to interdisciplinary science is qualitative at best. In this paper we leverage the bibliographic data set of the American Physical Society to quantify the role of interdisciplinarity in physics, and that of talent and luck in achieving success in scientific careers. We analyze a period of 30 years (1980-2009) tagging papers and their authors by means of the Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme (PACS), to show that some degree of interdisciplinarity is quite helpful to reach success, measured as a proxy of either the number of articles or the citations score.

Autoimmune hepatitis treatment in the elderly: A systematic review.

Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a rare chronic inflammatory liver disease with a high risk of progression to liver cirrhosis. The initial treatment for AIH usually includes a steroid, with or without azathioprine. AIH can present at any age; however, the most effective and safe induction treatment for AIH in the elderly remains unclear.

Treating advanced breast cancer with metronomic chemotherapy: what is known, what is new and what is the future?

The prognosis for patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer (mBC) remains poor, with a median survival of 2-4 years. About 10% of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients present with metastatic disease, and 30%-50% of those diagnosed at earlier stages will subsequently progress to mBC. In terms of ongoing management for advanced/metastatic breast cancer after failure of hormonal therapy, there is a high medical need for new treatment options that prolong the interval to the start of intensive cytotoxic therapy, which is often associated with potentially serious side effects and reduced quality of life.
