Methods: A retrospective review identified 14 patients (mean age 44 years) with displaced atlantoaxial fractures treated with ORIF without fusion. Patient demographics, fracture morphology, trauma etiology, instrumentation levels, timing of hardware removal, and complications were collected.

How mental health nursing is differentiated from other disciplines and professions, and what special contribution mental health nurses make to health services, is a question at the heart of contemporary practice. One of the significant challenges for mental health nurses is identifying, developing and advancing those aspects of their practice that they consider differentiate them in the multi-disciplinary mental health care team and to articulate clearly what a mental health nurse is and does. In the context of an enduring debate about the distinct identity of mental health nursing, this qualitative study explored the nature, scope and consequences of mental health nursing practice. Data for interpretation were generated through interviews with 36 mental health nurses, five of their clients and one health care colleague, each of whom were asked to speak in as much detail as possible about what they believe is special about mental health nursing and what had influenced them to arrive at this understanding. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, the study generated a substantive theory of recovery-focused mental health nursing expressed as 'Being in the here and now, side by side, co-constructing care'.

Methods: The authors provide a 'step-by-step' review of the technical details regarding this technique, as well as some important anatomical and radiological landmarks for its successful performance.
Conclusions: 'Sacral alar-iliac' screws provide several advantages in relation to pelvic fixation with iliac bolts such as: better alignment with the rods, use of a 'low-profile' screw, and fixation of the sacroiliac (SI) joint, which avoids postoperative SI joint-related pain.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To evaluate whether increasing the volume drained from chronic subdural hematomas (SDHs) via either twist drill drainage (TDD) or burr hole drainage (BHD) followed by instillation of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is more efficacious than simple drainage alone.
Methods: Patients admitted over the course of 42 months (2007-2010) to a single institution for treatment of chronic SDH were retrospectively evaluated.
Results: There were 139 patients treated for chronic SDH; 54 patients were treated with BHD alone, 3 were treated with tPA after BHD, 85 were treated with TDD alone, and 12 were treated with tPA after TDD.

In the present study, MMP-9, uPAR and cathepsin B genes were downregulated in glioma xenograft cells using shRNA plasmid constructs and we evaluated the involvement of integrins and changes in their adhesion, migration and invasive potential.

Conversely, an allograft has historically performed suboptimally for atlantoaxial arthrodesis as an onlay graft. The authors have modified a bone grafting technique to allow placement of a bicortical iliac crest allograft in an interpositional manner, and they evaluated it as an alternative to an autograft in posterior atlantoaxial arthrodesis.
