The case we describe reports the early sonographic findings of sirenomelia with oligodactylia at 9 weeks of gestation by transvaginal two-dimensional color Doppler ultrasonography imaging and its confirmation by hysteroscopic embryoscopy at 12 weeks to further characterize the findings. The embryo showed increased nuchal translucency and fused lower limbs with a large intra-abdominal vessel and two-vessel umbilical cords. The pregnancy was terminated by medical abortion induction after the patient viewed the embryoscopic images.

Sedoanalgesia in paediatric intensive care: a survey of 19 Italian units.

Aim: To analyse the methods used to manage and monitor sedoanalgesia at Italian paediatric intensive care units (ICUs).

Methods: Data were collected by administering a questionnaire that aimed to investigate whether ICUs adopted a validated protocol to manage sedoanalgesia.

Results: The results revealed that a majority of the ICUs adopt a protocol for dealing with sedation and analgesia, but this protocol is implemented with difficulty or not at all in routine clinical practice.

A tremendous improvement in every aspect of breast cancer management has occurred in the last two decades. Surgeons, once solely interested in the extipartion of the primary tumor, are now faced with the need to incorporate a great deal of information, and to manage increasingly complex tasks. As a comprehensive assessment of all aspects of breast cancer care is beyond the scope of the present paper, the current review will point out some of these innovations, evidence some controversies, and stress the need for the surgeon to specialize in the various aspects of treatment and to be integrated into the multidisciplinary breast unit team.

Effects of glyoxal or methylglyoxal on the metabolism of amino acids, lactate, glucose and acetate in the cerebral cortex of young and adult rats.

The in vitro effects of glyoxal and methylglyoxal on the metabolism of glycine, alanine, leucine, glutamate, glutamine, glucose, lactate and acetate were evaluated in cortico-cerebral slices from young (10-day-old) or adult (3-month-old) rats. In a first set of experiments with cortico-cerebral slices from young animals, the compounds glyoxal or methylglyoxal at 400 microM, increased the oxidation of alanine, leucine and glycine to CO(2) and decreased the protein synthesis from these amino acids. Lipid synthesis from alanine, leucine and glycine was not changed in the cortico-cerebral slices from young rats after glyoxals exposure.

Good response to second-line bevacizumab and interferon-alpha in a sunitinib-refractory patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

In recent years with the development of targeted agents such as bevacizumab, sunitinib, sorafenib, temsirolimus, and everolimus, the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma has changed dramatically. In clinical practice, sunitinib and bevacizumab are reserved for first-line treatment, but despite various guidelines, optimal treatment is still uncertain. We present, for the first time, a case of a good response to second-line bevacizumab and interferon-alpha in a patient who failed classical sunitinib treatment.

In this study, we demonstrate that human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells transfected with human tyrosine hydroxylase isoform 1 (SH + TH cells) were substantially more resistant to cell death induced by hydrogen peroxide and 6-hydroxydopamine when compared to wild-type SH-SY5Y cells (SH cells). SH + TH cells exhibit increased levels of dopamine (DA) compared to SH cells.
