Background: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) remain one of the worrying complications in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) due to their incidence and high level of attributable mortality. In light of these risks, antifungal prophylaxis has always been debated. We conducted a single-center retrospective study of two prophylactic antifungal agents (fluconazole/posaconazole) in 91 consecutive patients receiving induction chemotherapy for AML between 2005 and 2009, in order to evaluate the impact on the incidence of IFI and on the mycological flora of the patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies indicate that patients with pulmonary metastases from sarcomas may have improved survival through local ablative treatments, particularly for those with one to five lesions.
  • A multicentric retrospective study of sarcoma patients from 2000 to 2012 revealed that those who underwent local treatment had a median survival of 45.3 months compared to 12.6 months for those who did not receive such treatment.
  • The findings suggest that local ablative treatments, including surgery, significantly enhance overall survival rates for patients with oligometastatic sarcomas.

Glioblastoma multiform is the most common and aggressive brain tumor with a worse prognostic. Ionizing radiation is a cornerstone in the treatment of glioblastome with chemo-radiation association being the actual standard. As a paradoxal effect, it has been suggested that radiotherapy could have a deleterious effect on local recurrence of cancer.

Apart from everyday duties, such as doing the laundry or cleaning the house, there are tasks we do for pleasure and enjoyment. We do such tasks, like solving crossword puzzles or reading novels, without any external pressure or force; instead, we are intrinsically motivated: we do the tasks because we enjoy doing them. Previous studies suggest that external rewards, i.

Introduction: Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used in the pre-operative assessment of brain tumours. The aim of this prospective study was to identify the perfusion parameters from dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) and dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) perfusion imaging that could best discriminate between grade II and III gliomas.

Methods: MRI (3 T) including morphological ((T2 fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T1-weighted (T1W)+Gd)) and perfusion (DCE and DSC) sequences was performed in 39 patients with newly diagnosed suspected low-grade glioma after written informed consent in this review board-approved study.

Squamous cell carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract or head and neck cancers, are localized in a complex anatomical region with a major lymphohilic locoregional cervical extension. Cervical lymph node surgery is systematized and drainage areas are sectorized with an increasingly conservative attitude. Improving imaging techniques allow the realization of selective neck dissection; sentinel node techniques are being evaluated.

The purpose of new radiotherapy techniques is to better deliver dose conformation in the tumour volume while diminishing organs at risk exposition. Their development is soaring in the breast cancer field in the adjuvant setting with intensity-modulated radiation therapy but also in cerebral and extracerebral oligometastastic presentation. Their usage is still being debated for breast cancer care.

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can undergo unlimited self-renewal and have the capacity to differentiate into all somatic cell types, and are therefore an ideal source for the generation of cells and tissues for research and therapy. To realize this potential, defined cell culture systems that allow expansion of hPSCs and subsequent controlled differentiation, ideally in an implantable three-dimensional (3D) matrix, are required. Here we mimic spider silk - Nature's high performance material - for the design of chemically defined 2D and 3D matrices for cell culture.

In clinical practice and the literature, malignant melanoma usually appears in typical sites where melanocytes can be found: skin, eyes meninges and anal region. Malignant melanomas of the esophagus-gastrointestinal (EGI) tract are usually metastatic. Primary and diffuse EGI tract melanoma is rare and only a few descriptions of this presentation have been found in the literature.

Humans often evaluate their abilities by comparing their personal performance with that of others. For this process, it is critical whether the comparison turns out in one's favor or against it. Here, we investigate how social comparisons of performance are encoded and integrated on the neural level.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiation therapy is an important treatment for cancer and has been shown to help people live longer in many studies.
  • Some patients still have problems when cancer cells survive the treatment and can spread to other parts of the body.
  • Research suggests that radiation can actually help cancer cells move and grow more, so scientists are looking for ways to stop this and make treatments better.

The electron spins of semiconductor defects can have complex interactions with their host, particularly in polar materials like SiC where electrical and mechanical variables are intertwined. By combining pulsed spin resonance with ab initio simulations, we show that spin-spin interactions in 4H-SiC neutral divacancies give rise to spin states with a strong Stark effect, sub-10(-6) strain sensitivity, and highly spin-dependent photoluminescence with intensity contrasts of 15%-36%. These results establish SiC color centers as compelling systems for sensing nanoscale electric and strain fields.

Radiotherapy for epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) using volumetric intensity-modulated arc radiotherapy (VMAT). A 48-year-old woman was referred for curative irradiation of a vertebral EHE after failure of surgery. A comparison between VMAT and conventional conformal tridimensional (3D) dosimetry was performed and potential advantage of VMAT for sparing critical organs from irradiation's side effects was discussed.

Infant botulism is a paralytic syndrome which manifests as a result of ingesting spores of the toxin secreting bacterium Clostridium botulinum by infants. As opposed to botulism in adults, treating infant botulism with horse antiserum was not approved due to several safety issues. This restriction has led to the development of Human Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous (BIG-IV; sells under BabyBIG).

Neurodevelopmental disorders affect a substantial minority of the general population. Their origins are still largely unknown, but a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors causing disturbances of the central nervous system's maturation and a variety of higher cognitive skills is presumed. Only limited research of rather small sample size and narrow scope has been conducted in neurodevelopmental disorders using a twin-differences design.

There are only scarce data on the management of nonagenarians with breast cancer, and more particularly on the place of radiation therapy (RT). We report a retrospective study on patients aged 90 years old or older, with breast cancer, receiving RT. Records from RT departments from five institutions were reviewed to identify patients 90 years old of age and older undergoing RT over past decade for breast cancer.

In the field of radiotherapy, there is very little scientific data on the management of nonagenarians, especially in patients aged 90 years or more and with head and neck cancer (HNC). We made one of the first retrospective study of the feasibility and safety of radiotherapy in this population with HNC. Records of radiotherapy coming from four health facilities were studied to include all nonagenarian patients with HNC in the last 10 years and who received radiation therapy.

Objective: Trauma is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in modern society, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are the single leading cause of mortality among young adults. Pre-hospital acute care management has developed during recent years and guidelines have shown positive effects on the pre-hospital treatment and outcome for patients with severe traumatic brain injury. However, reports of impacts on improved nursing competence in the ambulance services are scarce.

Methylation of mercury (Hg) to highly toxic methyl Hg (MeHg), a process known to occur when organic matter (OM) decomposition leads to anoxia, is considered a worldwide threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. We measured temporal and spatial variations in sediment MeHg, total Hg (THg), and major elements in a freshwater lagoon in Sweden polluted with Hg-laden cellulose fibers. Fiber decomposition, confined to a narrow surface layer, resulted in loss of carbon (C), uptake of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S), and increased MeHg levels.
