Introduction: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) can potently inhibit inflammation yet there is a lack of understanding about the impact of donor characteristics on the efficacy of EVs. The goal of this study was to determine whether the sex and age of donor platelet-derived EVs (PEV) affected their ability to inhibit viral myocarditis.
Methods: PEV, isolated from men and women of all ages, was compared to PEV obtained from women under 50 years of age, which we termed premenopausal PEV (pmPEV).
We present the first controlled-environment measurements of the optical path-length change response of telecommunication submarine cables to active seismic and acoustic waves. We perform the comparison among integrated (optical interferometry) and distributed (distributed acoustic sensing, DAS) fibre measurements and ground truth data acquired by 58 geophones, 20 three-axis seismometers and 7 microphones. The comparison between different seismic acquisition methods is an essential step towards full validation and calibration of the data acquired using novel cable-based sensing techniques.

Sex differences in the immune response during myocarditis have been well described but upstream mechanisms in the heart that might influence sex differences in disease are not completely understood.
Methods: Male and female BALB/c wild type mice received an intraperitoneal injection of heart-passaged coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) or vehicle control.
Unlabelled: Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a non-enveloped picornavirus that can cause systemic inflammatory diseases including myocarditis, pericarditis, pancreatitis, and meningoencephalitis. We have previously reported that following infection, CVB3 localizes to mitochondria, inducing mitochondrial fission and mitophagy, while inhibiting lysosomal degradation by blocking autophagosome-lysosome fusion. This results in the release of virus-laden mitophagosomes from the host cell as infectious extracellular vesicles (EVs) which allow non-lytic viral egress.

Methods: To estimate the prevalence of autoimmune diseases in the US, we used electronic health record data from six large medical systems in the US. We developed a software program using common methodology to compute the estimated prevalence of autoimmune diseases alone and in aggregate that can be readily used by other investigators to replicate or modify the analysis over time.
Objectives: Patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) experience a wide array of symptoms and system disorders. This study aimed to identify whether differences occurred in 115 self-reported symptoms and comorbidities in patients diagnosed with hEDS or HSD.
Methods: In this study we analysed self-reported data from an EDS Clinic intake questionnaire in patients diagnosed with hEDS, HSD or no hypermobile conditions.
The development of pancreatic cancer requires both, acquisition of an oncogenic mutation in KRAS as well as an inflammatory insult. However, the physiological causes for pancreatic inflammation are less defined. We show here that oncogenic KRas-expressing pre-neoplastic lesion cells upregulate coxsackievirus (CVB) and adenovirus receptor (CAR).

PROMs from radiotherapy trials were identified from previous research and assessed against the United Kingdom Royal College of Radiologists' guidelines for tumour-site-specific side-effects. The analysis revealed that none of the 51 identified PROMs captured the full range of side-effects, with only 25 addressing fatigue and 6 addressing radiation-induced skin reactions.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with LC ( = 732) at the Mayo Long COVID Care Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and Jacksonville, Florida were sent questionnaires to assess the development of new or worsening comorbidities following COVID-19 compared to patients with SARS-CoV-2 that did not develop LC (controls).
Objective: Iron and other biologically important metals are essential to mitochondrial function but are not routinely evaluated. Their equilibrium is critical to the optimal performance of cells with high metabolic activity such as neurons, cardiomyocytes, and skeletal myocytes. Teenagers are at a high risk of iron deficiency even without anemia.

Most autoimmune diseases occur more often in women than men, with rheumatic autoimmune diseases being among those most highly expressed in women. Several key factors, identified mainly in animal models and cell culture experiments, are important in increasing autoimmune disease in females.

Methods: A single-centre retrospective evaluation was performed investigating inter-fraction motion in the prostate and involved nodal volumes of patients receiving pelvic ± PA nodal irradiation. Patients were selected for inclusion if they; were undergoing prostate + pelvic node +/- PA node radiation for prostate cancer with involved lymph nodes and had received daily online CBCT scans.
Background: Understanding the clinical features of myocarditis in various age groups is required to identify age-specific disease patterns.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine differences in sex distribution and clinical outcomes in patients with myocarditis of various ages.
Methods: Patients with acute or chronic myocarditis in 3 centers in Berlin, Germany from 2005 to 2021 and in the United States (National Inpatient Sample) from 2010 to 2019 were included.
The ubiquitin kinase-ligase pair PINK1-PRKN identifies and selectively marks damaged mitochondria for elimination via the autophagy-lysosome system (mitophagy). While this cytoprotective pathway has been extensively studied upon acute and complete depolarization of mitochondria, the significance of PINK1-PRKN mitophagy is less well established. Here we used a novel approach to study PINK1-PRKN signaling in different energetically demanding tissues of mice during normal aging.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of adult patients treated in the EDS Clinic from November 1, 2019, to June 20, 2022 to identify those with cardiac defects. Echocardiogram data were collected using a data collection service.
Infiltration of the myocardium with various cell types, cytokines and chemokines plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathies including inflammatory cardiomyopathies and myocarditis. A more comprehensive understanding of the precise immune mechanisms involved in acute and chronic myocarditis is essential to develop novel therapeutic approaches. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge of the immune landscape in cardiomyopathies based on etiology.

Presently, only women with underlying symptomatic hypermobility issues appear to develop headache from this anatomic issue. The hypothesized etiology is an abnormal reset of the patient's cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure to an elevated state.

Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the myocardium secondary to infectious and noninfectious insults. The most feared consequence of myocarditis is sudden cardiac death owing to electrical instability and arrhythmia. Typical presenting symptoms include chest pain, dyspnea, palpitations and/or heart failure.

Myocarditis is typically caused by viral infections, but most cases are thought to be subclinical. Echocardiography is often used for initial assessment of myocarditis patients but is poor at detecting subtle changes in cardiac dysfunction. Cardiac strain, such as global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global circumferential strain (GCS), represents an increasingly used set of measurements which can detect these subtle changes.

Objective: To examine the association of COVID-19 convalescent plasma transfusion with mortality and the differences between subgroups in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.
Patients And Methods: On October 26, 2022, a systematic search was performed for clinical studies of COVID-19 convalescent plasma in the literature from January 1, 2020, to October 26, 2022. Randomized clinical trials and matched cohort studies investigating COVID-19 convalescent plasma transfusion compared with standard of care treatment or placebo among hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 were included.
