Ribosome structure and activity are challenged at high temperatures, often demanding modifications to ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) to retain translation fidelity. LC-MS/MS, bisulfite-sequencing, and high-resolution cryo-EM structures of the archaeal ribosome identified an RNA modification, 4,4-dimethylcytidine (mC), at the universally conserved C918 in the 16S rRNA helix 31 loop. Here, we characterize and structurally resolve a class of RNA methyltransferase that generates mC whose function is critical for hyperthermophilic growth.

We investigated whether cerebral venous reflux (CVR) is more closely associated with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) than hypertensive microangiopathy in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) survivors.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 122 patients of spontaneous ICH with magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography imaging studies (2014-2022) in Taiwan.
Background And Purpose: We explored whether high-degree magnetic resonance imaging–visible perivascular spaces in centrum semiovale (CSO) are more prevalent in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) than hypertensive small vessel disease and their relationship to brain amyloid retention in patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).
Methods: One hundred and eight spontaneous ICH patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging and Pittsburgh compound B were enrolled. Topography and severity of enlarged perivascular spaces were compared between CAA-related ICH (CAA-ICH) and hypertensive small vessel disease–related ICH (non-CAA ICH).
Blood glucose measurements help to guide insulin therapy, thus reducing disease severities, secondary complications, and related mortalities. Efforts are underway to allow diabetes patients to experience a more convenient way to measure blood glucose and consequently increase their adherence to regular self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG). This study demonstrated a new SMBG system that integrated all components of a glucometer via a smartphone's optical sensing module to detect the colorimetric blood strip and obtains the blood glucose concentration with calculations performed by an application install in the smartphone.

Objective: To describe a novel mutation in TRK-fused gene (TFG) as a new cause of dominant axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) identified by exome sequencing and further characterized by in vitro functional studies.
Methods: Exome sequencing and linkage analysis were utilized to investigate a large Taiwanese family with a dominantly inherited adult-onset motor and sensory axonal neuropathy in which mutations in common CMT2-implicated genes had been previously excluded. Functional effects of the mutant gene products were investigated in vitro.
Background And Purpose: Hyperperfusion syndrome is a devastating complication of carotid stent placement. The shortening of cerebral circulation time after stent placement is seen as a good indicator of the development of hyperperfusion syndrome. The purpose of our study was to evaluate whether patients with ipsilateral transverse sinus stenosis are prone to having shortened cerebral circulation time after stent placement, subsequently leading to the possible development of hyperperfusion syndrome.

In adulthood, the ability of β-cells to grow, proliferate, and expand their mass is also characteristic of pathological states of insulin resistance. Translationally controlled tumor-associated protein (TCTP), an evolutionarily highly conserved protein that is implicated in cell growth and proliferation, has been identified as a novel glucose-regulated survival-supporting protein in pancreatic β-cells.
