Elderly patients are prone to develop postoperative neurocognitive deficits potentially precipitated by inadequate anesthetic management. To investigate the potential of EEG-guided individualized anesthetic titration we evaluated the effect of the patient's age on the spectral composition of the EEG during slow propofol induction. Twenty-six young (<65 years) and 25 old (≥65 years) patients received propofol until loss of responsiveness (LOR).

The aim of this 2-year study was to evaluate the influence of bed depth (40 and 60 cm) on the development of tropical ornamental species ( and ) and on the removal of different contaminants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate (N-NO), ammonium (N-NH), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), total coliforms (TCs) and fecal coliforms (FCs), in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs) for municipal wastewater treatment. The results showed that the depth of 60 cm favored the removal of COD, with removal efficiencies of 94% for the three plant species. The depth of 40 cm was most effective for the removal of N-NH (80-90%).

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are inflammatory diseases of infectious etiology that lead to the destruction of the supporting tissues located around teeth or implants. Although both pathologies share several characteristics, it is also known that they show important differences which could be due to the release of particles and metal ions from the implant surface. The activation of the inflammasome pathway is one of the main triggers of the inflammatory process.

Partially Saturated Vertical Constructed Wetlands (PSV-CWs) are novel wastewater treatment systems that work through aerobic and anaerobic conditions that favor the removal of pollutants found in high concentrations, such as rivers contaminated with domestic wastewater and landfill leachate. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of PSV-CWs using monocultures and polycultures of and to treat river waters contaminated with leachates from open dumps and domestic wastewater. Six experimental units of PSV-CWs were used; two were planted with monoculture, two with monoculture and two with polycultures of both plants.

Elderly and multimorbid patients are at high risk for developing unfavorable postoperative neurocognitive outcomes; however, well-adjusted and EEG-guided anesthesia may help titrate anesthesia and improve postoperative outcomes. Over the last decade, dexmedetomidine has been increasingly used as an adjunct in the perioperative setting. Its synergistic effect with propofol decreases the dose of propofol needed to induce and maintain general anesthesia.
