Oxidized Organic Aerosol (OOA), a major component of fine atmospheric particles, impacts climate and human health. Previous experiments and atmospheric models emphasize the importance of nocturnal OOA formation from NO· oxidation of biogenic VOCs. This seasonal study extends the understanding by showing that nocturnal oxidation of biomass-burning emissions can account for up to half of total OOA production in fall and winter.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study evaluates how well the SOFA and SAPS-II scores predict mortality following cardiac arrests in ICU patients, analyzing data from a German university hospital's ICU over three years.
  • - Findings show that while 29.8% of patients died during the ICU cardiac arrest, neither SOFA nor SAPS-II effectively predicted immediate mortality in these instances (P>0.05).
  • - However, SAPS-II was better at predicting hospital and one-year mortality, suggesting a cutoff value of 43.5 for hospital mortality with good specificity and sensitivity, and 40.5 for one-year mortality, indicating its potential usefulness in clinical settings.

Background: The prevention of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a major concern for health services around the world. The English NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS-DPP) offers a group face-to-face behaviour change intervention, based around exercise and diet, to adults with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (NDH), referred from primary care. Previous analysis of the first 100,000 referrals revealed just over half of those referred to the NHS-DPP took up a place.

Article Synopsis
  • Emergency admissions of patients with dementia tend to result in longer hospital stays, higher rates of emergency re-admission, and increased mortality compared to those without dementia.
  • This study analyzed data from over 5.5 million emergency admissions across England, comparing outcomes for patients aged 65 and older with and without dementia at three different points (2010/11, 2012/13, and 2016/17).
  • Although differences in outcomes between the groups were substantial, they were reduced when accounting for various patient demographics and health status, with patients with dementia experiencing longer stays and higher mortality rates throughout the study period.
