Feminization of the HIV epidemic in India has increasingly burdened the public health infrastructure to provide prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services. A mere 20% of pregnant women in the country receive HIV counseling and testing. One of the strategies, for expansion of PMTCT services is to ascertain an accurate identification of HIV-positive pregnant women.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHIV-associated dyslipemic lipodystrophy (HADL) is a heterogeneous syndrome of fat redistribution, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance, associated with markedly accelerated rates of lipolysis, intraadipocyte and intrahepatic reesterification, and very low-density lipoprotein-triglyceride synthesis and release. The objective of the study was to determine if rosiglitazone can ameliorate these lipid kinetic defects in patients with HADL. Infusions of [(13)C(1)]palmitate and [(2)H(5)]glycerol were used to measure total and net lipolysis, adipocyte and hepatic reesterification, and plasma free fatty acid (FFA) oxidation in 9 men with HADL, before and after 3 months of treatment with rosiglitazone (8 mg/d).

Design: Substudy of the Strategies for Management of Anti-Retroviral Therapy study, in which participants were randomized to intermittent CD4-guided [Drug Conservation (DC) group] or to continuous [Viral Suppression (VS) group] antiretroviral therapy.
Methods: Participants at 33 sites were coenrolled in the Strategies for Management of Anti-Retroviral Therapy Body Composition substudy.
Objectives: To assess the effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on bone mineral density (BMD) DESIGN: Randomized comparison of continuous ART (viral suppression group; VS) with intermittent ART (drug conservation group; DC) SETTING: Outpatient clinics in the United States, Australia, and Spain.
Participants: Participants in the Strategies for Management of Antiretroviral Therapy (SMART) Body Composition substudy.
Main Outcome Measures: Annual hip and spine BMD by dual-energy radiographic absorptiometry (DXA) and spine BMD by quantitative computed tomography (qCT).
