[The effect of insufficient iodine intake on the size and function of the thyroid gland].

Background: The supply of iodine indisputably affects the function of the thyroid gland. It is not clear, however, as to what extent a moderate iodopenia affects common thyroid parameters. OBJECTIVES, STARTING POINT AND MAIN PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of iodopenia (ioduria below 50 micrograms of iodine per litre of urine) on the values of T4, T3, TSH, the ankle-jerk time and sonographically ascertained thyroid gland volume in randomly selected sample of Czech population from 4 regions.

Correlations between parameters of body selenium status and peripheral thyroid parameters in the low selenium region.

The following were measured in 380 male and female inhabitants of Prague (n the age range 6-65 years):selenium in serum and urine, iodine in urine, thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroid volume, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), ankle jerk time, pulse rate and body fat. Correlations were calculated to assess the influence of Se upon the thyroid hormone parameters and their peripheral effects in Se-deficient regions both by using the linear correlation analysis and by using the multiple linear correlation analysis and the analysis of variance. Many significant linear correlations were found for whole groups of examined persons, for the individual groups (boys, men, girls and women) as well as for subgroups, according to the age and sex.

[Evaluation of epidemiologic studies using the EPI INFO program].

The authors describe the EPI INFO system suitable for introducing on a personal computer, compatible with the standard IBM XT/AT. The system was elaborated by a group of workers from Centres of Disease Control in Alabama in 1988. The advantage of the system is in addition to ready availability (it is distributed on a non-commercial basis), in particular because it combines the advantages of the data base and statistical programme system.
