The association of leukocyte adhesion defect type I and persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy in a Saudi Arabian family.

The authors describe 2 female sibling infants diagnosed with leukocyte adhesion defects CD11 and CD18. Both had successful bone marrow transplants from identical siblings. One of the patients was found to have persistent hypoglycemia of infancy.

Pattern of immediate type hypersensitivity reactions in the Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia.

Background: In the period between July, 1992, and July, 1994, 1,159 patients in our Allergy Clinic tested positive to one or more inhalants. The nationalities of the population tested included 806 Saudi Arabs and 241 Western expatriates (mainly North Americans). The others were of various different nationalities.

The risk of allergy in asthma.

The prevalence of atopy among asthmatics is more than 70 per cent. Atopy is more prevalent among older children and young asthmatic adults. It is inherited, but the pattern of inheritance is not well defined.

Effects of platelet activating factor on the chemotaxis of normodense eosinophils from normal subjects.

Highly purified eosinophils were obtained from normal subjects, and their chemotactic responses to platelet activating factor (PAF) were evaluated. PAF induced both eosinophil chemotactic and chemokinetic responses, and was 100 fold more potent eosinophil chemotactic factor as compared to eosinophil chemotactic factor of anaphylaxis. On the other hand, leukotriene B4 did not show any eosinophil chemotactic activity.

The mechanism of corticosteroids in treating asthma.

It would be difficult for physicians or allergists to imagine doing without corticosteroids in managing difficult cases of bronchial asthma. It is beyond any doubt that CS act on many sites to help reverse the pathologic process of bronchial asthma. Corticosteroids enhance the beta-adrenergic response to relieve the muscle spasm.
