Early modern humans and morphological variation in Southeast Asia: fossil evidence from Tam Pa Ling, Laos.

Little is known about the timing of modern human emergence and occupation in Eastern Eurasia. However a rapid migration out of Africa into Southeast Asia by at least 60 ka is supported by archaeological, paleogenetic and paleoanthropological data. Recent discoveries in Laos, a modern human cranium (TPL1) from Tam Pa Ling's cave, provided the first evidence for the presence of early modern humans in mainland Southeast Asia by 63-46 ka.

A differential geometry approach for biomedical image processing.

We show in this paper how simple considerations about bio-arrays images lead to a peak segmentation allowing the genes activity analysis. Bio-arrays images have a particular structure and the aim of the paper is to present a mathematical method allowing their automatic processing. The differential geometry approach used here can be also employed for other types of images presenting grey level peaks corresponding to a functional activity or to a chemical concentration.

[Aging of the pancreas. Its implication in malnutrition states in elderly persons].

The influence of ageing on exocrine pancreatic function was investigated in rats and in men. Young rats (3-months old, 150-200 g) and old rats (24-month old, 400-500 g) were killed after fasting overnight. Small pancreatic fragments were removed and kept for stereological analysis both in light and electron microscopy; in addition, levels of tritium-labelled leucine uptake and protein synthesis were measured by quantitative histoautoradiography on isolated acini in vitro.
