Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving the diagnosis of arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AAION) from giant cell arteritis, which can prevent vision loss, particularly when symptoms are subtle or unreliable tests are involved.
  • Researchers developed a deep learning system (DLS) to differentiate between AAION and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) by analyzing color fundus images from a large international dataset involving 961 eyes from 802 patients.
  • The DLS demonstrated promising performance metrics, such as area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, validating its potential as a diagnostic tool during the acute phase.

Ibuprofen, a commonly used over-the-counter medication, is widely recognized for its effective pain relief properties but is also associated with various adverse effects, including rare ocular and neurological manifestations. We report a case of a 27-year-old male who experienced transient vertical diplopia following a standard ibuprofen dosage for back pain. Symptoms resolved promptly upon discontinuation of the drug, with normal findings on extensive clinical and laboratory evaluations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the clinical and genetic aspects of childhood-onset Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) to understand how it affects visual outcomes.
  • It included a retrospective analysis of 68 patients under 12 years old from Italy and the UK, using various ophthalmologic evaluations to assess visual loss.
  • Results indicated that children who experience visual loss before age 9 have better visual outcomes compared to those affected later, suggesting that earlier onset might correlate with a milder form of the disease.

Background: Many neurologic complications have been described after severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) including atypical cases of optic neuritis (ON), positive to myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) IgG.

Objective: To report a case of MOG-IgG-associated ON and discuss why SARS-CoV-2 infection could be a potential trigger.

Methods: Retrospective single case report.
