Redox Imbalance and Antioxidant Defenses Dysfunction: Key Contributors to Early Aging in Childhood Cancer Survivors.

Survival rates for childhood cancer survivors (CCS) have improved, although they display a risk for early frailty due to the long-term effects of chemo/radiotherapy, including early aging. This study investigates antioxidant defenses and oxidative damage in mononuclear cells (MNCs) from CCS, comparing them with those from age-matched and elderly healthy individuals. Results show impaired antioxidant responses and increased oxidative stress in CCS MNCs, which exhibited uncoupled oxidative phosphorylation, leading to higher production of reactive oxygen species, similar to metabolic issues seen in elderly individuals.

Food desires have been studied as a critical subjective aspect of eating and are closely linked to the pleasure and comprehensive care associated with food. Women experiencing homelessness (WeH) face food insecurity intertwined with social stigma and neglect based on sex, race, and sexuality. However, the WeH's desire is often overlooked in studies and government policies on food security.

Assessing Mechanochemical Properties of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Items in Cultural Heritage Through a Multimodal Spectroscopic Approach.

A multimodal spectroscopic approach is proposed to correlate the mechanical and chemical properties of plastic materials in art and design objects, at both surface and subsurface levels, to obtain information about their conservation state and to monitor their degradation. The approach was used to investigate the photo-oxidation of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), a plastic commonly found in many artistic and design applications, using ABS-based LEGO bricks as model samples. The modifications of the chemical and viscoelastic properties of ABS during photoaging were monitored by correlative Brillouin and Raman microspectroscopy (BRaMS), combined with portable and noninvasive broad-range external reflection infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry, directly applicable in museums.

Randomized Controlled Trial of Irrigation-Coupled Bipolar Electrocautery Versus Tourniquet in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Background: Recovery from total knee arthroplasty remains arduous for some patients, prompting interest in perioperative management. While tourniquet use is not associated with longer-term outcomes, its effect on quadriceps strength in the immediate postoperative window is unknown.

Methods: A single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial of 66 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty from 2019 to 2022 was performed to compare the use of an irrigation-coupled bipolar device (ICBD) and no tourniquet (ICBD group, N = 34) to tourniquet use with no ICBD (tourniquet group, N = 32).
