Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to create a comprehensive consensus on managing myopia in children and young people across the UK and Ireland through a Delphi method involving 34 expert optometrists and ophthalmologists.
  • The panel agreed on 131 statements, emphasizing the need for parental discussions on interventions for myopia developed before age 13, publicly funded options for those at risk, and the consideration of individual hobbies and lifestyles in choosing treatment.
  • Future research is essential to better identify at-risk patients, assess the effectiveness of treatments, and adapt management strategies as new evidence arises.

With over a billion adults worldwide currently affected, presbyopia remains a ubiquitous, global problem. Despite over a century of study, the precise mechanism of ocular accommodation and presbyopia progression remains a topic of debate. Accordingly, this narrative review outlines the lenticular and extralenticular components of accommodation together with the impact of age on the accommodative apparatus, neural control of accommodation, models of accommodation, the impact of presbyopia on retinal image quality, and both historic and contemporary theories of presbyopia.

studies using rat, mouse, and human microsomes and hepatocytes on the bacterial β-glucuronidase inhibitor 1-((6,8-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinolin-3-yl)methyl)-3-(4-ethoxyphenyl)-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiourea) (Inh 1) revealed extensive metabolism in all species. The intrinsic clearances of Inh 1 in human, mouse, and rat hepatic microsomes were 30.9, 67.

Purpose: To identify compositional differences in the gut microbiome of nonmyopes (NM) and myopes using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing and to investigate whether the microbiome may contribute to the onset or progression of the condition.

Methods: Faecal samples were collected from 52 adult participants, of whom 23 were NM, 8 were progressive myopes (PM), and 21 were stable myopes (SM). The composition of the gut microbiota in each group was analysed using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing.

Lignin is a complex heteroaromatic polymer which is one of the most abundant and diverse biopolymers on the planet. It comprises approximately one third of all woody plant matter, making it an attractive candidate as an alternative, renewable feedstock to petrochemicals to produce fine chemicals. However, the inherent complexity of lignin makes it difficult to analyse and characterise using common analytical techniques, proving a hindrance to the utilisation of lignin as a green chemical feedstock.
