Metabolites derived from the intestinal microbiota, including bile acids (BA), extensively modulate vertebrate physiology, including development, metabolism, immune responses and cognitive function. However, to what extent host responses balance the physiological effects of microbiota-derived metabolites remains unclear. Here, using untargeted metabolomics of mouse tissues, we identified a family of BA-methylcysteamine (BA-MCY) conjugates that are abundant in the intestine and dependent on vanin 1 (VNN1), a pantetheinase highly expressed in intestinal tissues.

Intricate coupling between metabolism and protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) has emerged as a fundamental aspect of cellular regulation. Recent studies demonstrate that protein modifications can originate from diverse metabolites, and that their regulation is closely tied to the cellular metabolic state. Here we explore recently uncovered PTMs, including the concept of 'modification of a modification', as well as associated feedback and feedforward regulatory mechanisms, in which modified proteins impact not only related metabolic pathways but also other signaling cascades affecting physiology and diseases.

The common milkweed is widespread in North America and produces cardenolide toxins that deter herbivores by targeting the transmembrane enzyme Na/K-ATPase. In 1979, Nobel Laureate Tadeus Reichstein elucidated the structure of novel cardenolides isolated from roots and proposed structures for several other cardenolides that could not be confirmed. A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→K^{±}γ, and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ is performed using up to 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products.
