Decompressive hemicraniectomy following malignant middle cerebral artery infarctions: a mixed methods exploration of carer experience and level of burden.

Purpose: This study explores the experiences and sense of burden of family carers of survivors of malignant middle cerebral artery infarctions who had undergone decompressive hemicraniectomy. To date, there have been no studies examining carer outcomes among this unique population. This study, taken alongside an already published study of survivor outcomes, provides a more holistic picture with regard to sequelae within the sample.

Long-term neuropsychological and psychosocial outcomes of decompressive hemicraniectomy following malignant middle cerebral artery infarctions.

Purpose: This study examines long-term neuropsychological and psychosocial outcomes of survivors of malignant middle cerebral artery infarction treated via decompressive hemicraniectomy.

Method: A case series design facilitated a detailed analysis of the outcomes among five participants. Neuropsychological domains assessed included premorbid and current IQ, sustained, selective and divided attention, visual and auditory memory, executive functioning and visuo-spatial ability.

Head injury from a bungee run.

An adaptation of bungee jumping, 'bungee running', involves participants attempting to run as far as they can whilst connected to an elastic rope which is anchored to a fixed point. Usually considered a safe recreational activity, we report a potentially life-threatening head injury following a bungee running accident.

An investigation into waste charges in Ireland, with emphasis on public acceptability.

There are 34 local authorities in Ireland with legal responsibility to deal with waste arising in their jurisdictions. In 2003 the National government introduced legislation that allows local authorities to recover the costs of waste collection and disposal, and to do so by 'executive function', i.e.

Fresh osteochondral allografts: results in the patellofemoral joint.

Unlabelled: Twenty knees in 18 patients were treated (mean age, 42 years; range, 19-64 years) with fresh osteochondral allografting limited to the patellofemoral joint. The knees were analyzed retrospectively to determine the rate of successful outcomes. The trochlea and patella were treated in 12 patients and the patella was treated in eight patients.
