Introduction: Autoantibody-mediated complement activation plays an essential role in a variety of autoimmune disorders. However, the role of complement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to determine the role of complement C3 in the development of a recently described SSc mouse model based on autoimmunity to angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1R).

Medical congresses play a pivotal role in the continuing medical education of healthcare professionals (HCPs), particularly in light of the rapid advancements in medical knowledge and technology. Notwithstanding, little is known about the internal dynamics of such events and how they contribute to the learning processes in communities of health professional practice. This study aims to uncover and elucidate what motivates HCPs to participate in medical congresses and how they experience their participation through a qualitative study.

Watershed models of plastic export from rivers to oceans have large uncertainties, and improvements require direct measurements of riverine macroplastic (>5 mm) and microplastic (<5 mm). Also, plastic represents allochthonous carbon inputs to rivers but is rarely measured as carbon mass. We quantified plastic and organic matter within floating debris rafts and open water in an urban river.

Scaling up for success: from bioactive natural products to new medicines.

Covering 1986 to presentNatural product drug discovery at Novartis has a long and successful history of delivering life saving medicines to millions of patients. In this viewpoint, we are presenting the tools we use and challenges we face as we advance natural products from early research into development and beyond. We are leveraging our collection of 90 000 microbial strains and 20 000 isolated natural products to find new medications in an interdisciplinary approach that requires expertise in microbiology, computational biology, synthetic biology, chemistry, and process development.
