Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) of unknown aetiology. The 'hygiene hypothesis' (HH) suggests that several hygiene-related factors may have contributed to the increased incidence of IBD. The effect of pregnancy on Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis after pregnancy has been investigated here. During the survey period, 29 pregnancies occurred in 18 Crohn's patients, and 25 in 19 ulcerative colitis patients.
