Model of biological quantum logic in DNA.

The DNA molecule has properties that allow it to act as a quantum logic processor. It has been demonstrated that there is coherent conduction of electrons longitudinally along the DNA molecule through pi stacking interactions of the aromatic nucleotide bases, and it has also been demonstrated that electrons moving longitudinally along the DNA molecule are subject to a very efficient electron spin filtering effect as the helicity of the DNA molecule interacts with the spin of the electron. This means that, in DNA, electrons are coherently conducted along a very efficient spin filter.

Ultrahigh resolution spectral analysis based on a Brillouin fiber laser.

We report what we believe to be a novel experimental heterodyne technique for the spectral analysis of continuous optical wave sources. The achieved resolution is as low as the kilohertz level, with a dynamic range in excess of 90 dB. The technique is based on a heterodyne detection between the source under test (SUT) and a Brillouin fiber laser generated by this SUT.

U.S. airport entry screening in response to pandemic influenza: modeling and analysis.

Background: A stochastic discrete event simulation model was developed to assess the effectiveness of passenger screening for Pandemic Influenza (PI) at U.S. airport foreign entry.

An edit-distance model for the approximate matching of timed strings.

An edit-distance model that can be used for the approximate matching of contiguous and non-contiguous timed strings is presented. The model extends the concept of the weighted string-edit distance by introducing timed edit operations and by making the edit costs time dependent. Special attention is paid to the timed null symbols that are associated with the timed insertions and deletions.

Healthcare vulnerabilities to electromagnetic pulse.

The U.S. healthcare system is particularly vulnerable to the effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack because of the system's technological sophistication, but while national defense planners prepare for the considerable threat that EMP poses, there has been little or no recognition of this threat within the US healthcare community, and neither has there been any significant healthcare planning to deal with such an eventuality.
