Affordable housing is commonly described as an important determinant of health, but there are relatively few intervention studies of the effects of housing on health. In this paper, we describe the results of a quasi-experimental, longitudinal study investigating the impacts of receiving social housing among a cohort of 502 people on waitlists for social housing in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. Specifically, we sought to determine if adults who received housing were more likely than a control group to show improvements in depression, psychological distress, and self-rated mental health 6, 12 and 18 months after moving to housing.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the effects of eutrophication on stream macrophytes is essential for effective environmental management, but their response is complicated due to various habitat factors like light and flow.
  • The study examined macrophyte communities in 30 lowland streams, specifically looking at water quality, internal nutrient status, and additional land use data to analyze the impact of eutrophication.
  • Results indicated that non-native plant species dominate eutrophic streams, with specific growth strategies correlating to different nutrient conditions, highlighting the complex relationships between macrophyte abundance and eutrophication dynamics.

Purpose: Public health experts and advocates have long raised concerns about the pandemic preparedness of prison systems worldwide - an issue that became increasingly salient at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. People in prison experience poorer health outcomes compared to the general population, making timely access to adequate health services in prison critical for their health and wellbeing. This study aims to identify the extent of the literature on initial changes in mental health and substance use services for people in prison during the COVID-19 pandemic, summarize and synthesize the findings and identify areas in need of further study.
