- A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the proton-pump inhibitor pantoprazole on critically ill patients undergoing invasive ventilation, comparing it to a placebo.
- The trial included 4,821 patients and found that pantoprazole significantly reduced the incidence of clinically important upper gastrointestinal bleeding compared to placebo (1.0% vs. 3.5%).

Importance: Blood collection for laboratory testing in intensive care unit (ICU) patients is a modifiable contributor to anemia and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. Most blood withdrawn is not required for analysis and is discarded.
Objective: To determine whether transitioning from standard-volume to small-volume vacuum tubes for blood collection in ICUs reduces RBC transfusion without compromising laboratory testing procedures.
Article Synopsis
- The study investigates the effectiveness of probiotics, specifically Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and other infections in critically ill patients in ICUs across North America and Saudi Arabia.
- A large randomized trial involved 2,653 patients, showing no significant reduction in VAP rates among those receiving probiotics compared to the placebo group (21.9% vs. 21.3%).

A multi-site study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the Keeogo™ exoskeleton as a mobility assist device for use in the clinic and at home in people with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Twenty-four participants were randomized in a two-stage cross-over design that evaluated the immediate effects of using the exoskeleton in the clinic and the cumulative effects of training and home use. Immediate effects were quantified by comparing 1) physical performance with|without (W|WO) the device during a battery of mobility tests, and 2) physical activity levels at home (actigraphy) for one month, two weeks W|WO the device.

The journey between 2012 and now has been difficult, and nursing leadership was necessary to inform key stakeholders regarding the inequities faced by francophone nursing students and to bring about change. Here is a description of the arduous work done by a group of concerned nurses (active and retired) to advocate for the rights of francophone nursing students.
