Worse survival of hepatocellular cancer patients with membranous insulin receptor overexpression.

Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) therapy is in need for an ideal companion diagnostic. Preclinical experimental studies have identified the insulin receptor (IR) and its synergistic counterpart, the IGF1 receptor (IGF1R), as relevant in HCC development, and the ligands IGF1 and IGF2 have been found to be elevated in HCC. This study aimed to bridge the gap to the clinical setting and explore whether the IR or the IGF1R would be of prognostic significance and would be associated with clinicopathologic parameters in HCC patients.

Virtual Monoenergetic Imaging of Thoracoabdominal Computed Tomography Angiography on Photon-Counting Detector Computertomography: Assessment of Image Quality and Leveraging Low-keV Series for Salvaging Suboptimal Contrast Acquisitions.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the possibility of image improvement of ECG-gated, high-pitch computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the thoracoabdominal aorta before transaortic valve replacement (TAVR) on a novel dual-source photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) in the setting of suboptimal low-contrast attenuation.

Methods: Continuously examined patients who underwent an ECG-gated, high-pitch CTA of the aorta on a PCD-CT with a contrast decrease of at least 50% between the ascending aorta and the common femoral arteries (CFA) were included. Patient characteristics were documented.

RhD-negative red blood cells can be saved during liver transplantation in RhD-negative patients due to low risk of alloimmunization against RhD.

Background: Transfusion demand is high in liver transplantation (LT), and thus RhD-positive (RhD+) red blood cell concentrates (RBCs) are sometimes given to RhD-negative (RhD-) patients. Due to immunosuppression, these patients rarely produce anti-D. We investigated the rate of anti-D formation in RhD- patients undergoing LT who were transfused with RhD+ RBCs as well as the number of transfused RhD- and RhD+ RBCs.

Extracellular vesicles, small membrane-bound packages secreted by virtually all cells of the body, have become a focus of interest in nephrology over the recent years. After the first characterization of their proteomic and transcriptomic content, scientific attention shifted toward their potential as biomarkers for kidney diseases both as diagnostic and monitoring tools. More recently, researchers have begun exploring whether extracellular vesicles mediate intercellular signaling inside the nephron and between the kidney and other organs throughout the body.
