Skeletal muscle is critically dependent on the function of muscle stem cells (MuSCs) for effective muscle repair following injury. Here, we detail a protocol for the isolation of primary muscle cells and subsequent analysis of proliferation capacity in vitro using EdU (5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine) on fixed cells. We also describe a cell death analysis on living cells with the identification of early- and late-apoptotic cells, as well as necrotic cells, through the incorporation of propidium iodide and YO-PRO-1 staining.

Knowledge of protein-ligand complexes is essential for efficient drug design. Virtual docking can bring important information on putative complexes but it is still far from being simultaneously fast and accurate. Receptors are flexible and adapt to the incoming small molecules while docking is highly sensitive to small conformational deviations.

Refining the role of apex predators in marine food webs is a necessary step in predicting the consequences of their global decline under the footprint of fishing activities. White sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are vulnerable predators, performing large migrations and able to forage on a variety of prey in different habitats. In the Northeast Pacific, juvenile and adult white sharks are found seasonally at the same aggregation sites, such as Guadalupe Island off Mexico.

The histone H3 lysine 9 methyltransferase SETDB1 controls transcriptional repression to direct stem cell fate. Here, we show that Setdb1 expression by adult muscle stem cells (MuSCs) is required for skeletal muscle regeneration. We find that SETDB1 represses the expression of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) in MuSCs.

Although two clusters have been identified in France, constitutional factor XI deficiency is a rare disorder. Acquired factor XI deficiency is extremely rare. The management of factor XI deficiency is not staightforward because of the unpredictable bleeding tendency that does not clearly relate to the factor XI level.
