Climate change is expected to intensify bark beetle population outbreaks in forests globally, affecting biodiversity and trajectories of change. Aspects of individual tree resistance remain poorly quantified, particularly with regard to the role of phenolic compounds, hindering robust predictions of forest response to future conditions. In 2003, we conducted a mechanical wounding experiment in a Norway spruce forest that coincided with an outbreak of the bark beetle, Ips typographus.

The increasing incidence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) in France prompted the publication of national recommendations in 2010. Based on these, we developed a toolkit and a warning system to optimise management of ESBL-E infected or colonised patients in both community and hospital settings. The impact of this initiative on quality of care was assessed in a teaching hospital.

Purpose: To describe the antifungal stewardship programme in our hospital and to assess its impact on total antifungal prescriptions and their cost, and on the process of care measures regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic management of invasive aspergillosis and candidaemia.

Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study describing the multifaceted antifungal stewardship programme in place at our French teaching tertiary-care hospital since 2005. Several actions were implemented successively, including the systematic evaluation of all costly antifungal prescriptions (echinocandins, lipid formulations of amphotericin B, posaconazole and voriconazole).

The woolly poplar aphid, Phloeomyzus passerinii (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a major pest of poplar plantations in the Mediterranean basin and the Near East. Aphids colonize poplar trunks and feed upon the cortical parenchyma. Despite the economic importance of poplar, little is known about the mechanisms involved in poplar resistance to this pest.

Objectives: An antibiotic stewardship program was implemented in our teaching hospital in 1999, and strengthened in 2005. We report its organization and impact on antibiotic use.

Methods: This observational study was conducted during a 10-year period (2002-2011).
