Successful surgical excision of the accessory urethra in a 13-year-old boy with Effmann Type IIA-2 urethral duplication. Case report and literature review.

Introduction And Clinical Importance: Urethral duplication is a congenital anomaly characterized by the partial or full development of an auxiliary urethra as a second urethral channel varying in extent and location. The course of treatment for urethral duplication should be individualized for each patient based on the type of anomaly and the existence of symptoms. In most cases, if the ventral orthotopic urethra is normal, excision of the dorsal auxiliary urethra is almost always curative.

Microneedle patch-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to quantify protein biomarkers of tuberculosis.

There is a clinical need for differential diagnosis of the latent versus active stages of tuberculosis (TB) disease by a simple-to-administer test. Alpha-crystallin (Acr) and early secretory antigenic target-6 (ESAT-6) are protein biomarkers associated with the latent and active stages of TB, respectively, and could be used for differential diagnosis. We therefore developed a microneedle patch (MNP) designed for application to the skin to quantify Acr and ESAT-6 in dermal interstitial fluid by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Words and numbers: a comparative study of medical and journalism students' descriptors of risk, numeracy and preferences for health risk communication.

Background: Given the complementary roles of health professionals and journalists in communicating health risks to patients and the public, there have been calls for physicians to work with journalists to improve the quality of health information received by the public. Understanding the preferences of medical and journalism students for the way in which health risks are communicated and their understanding of words used to describe risk is an important first step to inform interdisciplinary learning.

Methods: Medical and journalism students (n = 203) completed an online survey where they were given qualitative descriptors of risk such as 'a chance', 'probably' and 'unlikely', and asked to assign a number that represents what the word means to them.

The Many Hosts of Mycobacteria 9 (MHM9): A conference report.

The Many Hosts of Mycobacteria (MHM) meeting series brings together basic scientists, clinicians and veterinarians to promote robust discussion and dissemination of recent advances in our knowledge of numerous mycobacterial diseases, including human and bovine tuberculosis (TB), nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection, Hansen's disease (leprosy), Buruli ulcer and Johne's disease. The 9th MHM conference (MHM9) was held in July 2022 at The Ohio State University (OSU) and centered around the theme of "Confounders of Mycobacterial Disease." Confounders can and often do drive the transmission of mycobacterial diseases, as well as impact surveillance and treatment outcomes.
