Coastal seas are under increasing pressure from extreme weather events and sea level rise, resulting in impacts such as changing hydrodynamic conditions, coastal erosion, and marine heat waves. To monitor changes in coastal marine habitats, such as reefs and macrophytes meadows, which add to the resilience of our coasts, consistent, medium- to long-term seafloor observations are needed. This project aims to deliver repeated, high-frequency sonar surveys on a stationary seabed mooring of a specific target area over a period of up to several months.

The concept of species sensitivity differences is important in ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment, but testing usually focuses on lethality of toxicants. The effects on the suborganismal level are mostly ignored; therefore, the present study assessed a biomarker of genotoxicity (the alkaline comet assay) to compare species sensitivities. Five earthworm species (Amynthas diffringens, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Dendrodrilus rubidus, Eisenia fetida and Microchaetus benhami) were exposed for 48 h to sublethal concentrations of cadmium sulphate in reconstituted soil water and DNA integrity was evaluated with the parameter Tail DNA %.

A noninvasive repeatable method to harvest oocytes for in vitro fertilization (IVF) could potentially be used to assist reproduction in endangered equid species. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of male, female and fetal cord sera, follicular fluid, and seminal plasma on human sperm-zona pellucida binding, using the hemizona assay. Steroids, gonadotrophins, growth hormone and prolactin concentrations in follicular fluid and sera were also analysed. The influence of follicular fluid (10 or 50%, v/v) and sera (10%) on sperm-zona pellucida binding was investigated by supplementing the sperm processing medium as well as the sperm-hemizona incubation medium.
