Gelsolin Is Associated with Longer Metastasis-free Survival and Reduced Cell Migration in Estrogen Receptor-positive Breast Cancer.

Background: Tumor cell migration is a prerequisite for metastasis formation. The role of the actin-modulating protein, gelsolin, in metastasis is controversial, as previous studies have reported associations with both worse and better prognosis.

Materials And Methods: We analysed the association of gelsolin mRNA levels with metastasis-free survival in three cohorts (n=766) of patients with node-negative breast cancer.

[Complicated course of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy].

The case presented deals with the complicated course of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a 45-year-old female patient due to cholecystolithiasis. Objectives: Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity, comprising enterobacteria, non-fermenters, Gram-positive cocci and some anaerobic species. Members of these species are common pathogens in acute and chronic cholecystitis. This suggests that levofloxacin may be used as peri-operative prophylaxis in gall-bladder surgery.

Background/aims: Ethanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase in the human stomach. This metabolism contributes to the so-called first-pass metabolism of ethanol which is affected by gender, medication, and morphological alterations of the gastric mucosa. Recently, it has been shown that Helicobacter pylori is capable to oxidize ethanol to acetaldehyde in vitro.

Complicated small-bowel diverticula cause abdominal pain, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, small-bowel obstruction, and peritonitis. The present patient, had an occult perforation of a small-bowel diverticulum. There were diverticula throughout the whole small bowel.
