Article Synopsis
  • The PreLeisH study investigated Leishmania markers in HIV-positive individuals at risk of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Ethiopia, aiming to predict VL and create a management strategy.
  • Over two years, researchers tracked 490 participants, finding that specific Leishmania tests could effectively indicate VL risk levels, with 92.3% classified as low risk.
  • The study highlights the importance of identifying high-risk individuals for targeted intervention, emphasizing the need for further research in this area.

Importance: Sheep and goat pox (SGP) virus infection is a highly fatal viral infection of small ruminants that causes major production losses in sheep and goats in Ethiopia while also limiting international trade.

Objective: This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of SGP infection and assess related risk variables.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to August 2023 on 384 serum samples taken from sheep and goats.

Background: The protective effectiveness of vector control in malaria relies on how the implemented tools overlap with mosquito species-specific compositions and bionomic traits. In Ethiopia, targeted entomological data enabling strategic decision-making are lacking around high-risk migrant worker camps in the lowlands and resident communities in the highlands-resulting in suboptimal malaria control strategies for both populations. This study investigates spatial and temporal mosquito behavior, generating baseline evidence that will improve malaria control for both migrant workers in the lowlands and their home communities in the highlands.

Article Synopsis
  • In sub-Saharan Africa, diagnosing AIDS dementia is challenging due to under-medicalization, delays in seeking care, and varying causes of dementia.
  • A retrospective study analyzed 196 patients hospitalized for dementia at the University Hospital of Conakry from 2016 to 2021, using DSM-IV and AAN classification criteria.
  • The findings indicated that HIV-positive patients exhibited severe cognitive and motor impairments, with diagnosis supported by serological tests and MRI imaging, emphasizing the need for careful differentiation from other types of dementia.*
