The virtual control group (VCG) concept was originally developed in the IMI2 project eTRANSAFE, using data of control animals which pharmaceutical companies have accrued over decades from animal toxicity studies. This control data could be repurposed to create virtual control animals to reduce or replace concurrent controls in animal studies. Initial work demonstrated the general feasibility of the VCG concept, but implementation requires significant further collaborative efforts.

Article Synopsis
  • Ovarian failure (OF) affects around 1% of women under 40, often with unknown causes, which complicates personalized treatment approaches and highlights the need for genetic research.
  • A study of 150 women’s genetic data identified 18 genes with significantly higher rates of genetic variations (SNVs) in those with OF compared to controls, suggesting new biological insights into the condition.
  • Experimental validation in fruit flies showed that six of these genes were linked to reduced fertility, and the analysis also identified disruptions in key biological pathways important for ovarian function.

Article Synopsis
  • Women's fertility declines significantly between the ages of 35-40 due to decreased ovarian activity and challenges in achieving pregnancy, both naturally and via assisted reproductive technologies.
  • A systematic review of 142 studies from PubMed was conducted to explore the effects of age on the uterus and endometrium, focusing specifically on reproductive outcomes related to embryo transfers from younger egg donors.
  • Results showed that advanced maternal age leads to a thinner endometrium and negatively impacts key fertility metrics, such as implantation and live birth rates, largely due to changes in uterine structure and hormone production.

This communication describes a solution to the vexing problem of synthesis of 4-nitroisoxazolidine rings from cyclic nitrones and β-nitrostyrenes. The adduct 2 is quantitatively synthesised from -β-nitrostyrene under mild conditions avoiding purification, while the adduct 4 is obtained at higher temperatures. Furthermore, a Crystallization-Induced Diastereomer Transformation (CIDT) process was used to epimerise the NO bond from 2 to the adduct 3 with total conversion assisted by the -halogen substitution of the aromatic ring without any additives.

Objectives: Preoperative medication errors can be prevented by screening patients through a preoperative pharmaceutical care consultation. The aim of this study was to analyse the cost-effectiveness of implementing such a consultation and to determine which patients would benefit most.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted that included all patients who underwent a preoperative pharmacy consultation between 2016 and 2020.
