Article Synopsis
  • Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by the presence of an extra X chromosome (47,XXY), occurring in about 1 in 600 male births, while a rarer combination with some 46,XX cells also exists.
  • A study analyzed the clinical records of 34 patients with this unique karyotype across 14 medical institutions, finding significant variability in symptoms and the proportion of XX cells in their samples.
  • The research concluded that clinical manifestations are highly diverse, which complicates treatment, and emphasized the importance of using advanced genetic testing methods to accurately identify the condition due to potential mosaicism.

We present the case of a 30-year-old male with anterior shoulder dislocation in which a bedside handheld ultrasound was used after sedation and a reduction procedure to confirm successful reduction. X-ray imaging as well as bedside ultrasound was performed before and after the reduction. The bedside handheld ultrasound demonstrated findings comparable to the X-ray results.

Objective: To reduce unnecessary simultaneous karyotype analysis and chromosomal microarray (CMA) testing in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Study Design: This quality improvement study investigated the effect of collaborative efforts between the NICU, cytogenetics, and clinical genetics on numbers of genetic tests, rates of abnormal tests, and number of genetics consults comparing baseline and 5-month intervention periods.

Results: Simultaneous karyotype analyses and CMAs decreased due to a decrease in karyotype testing (11.

Background: Black Americans, particularly in the southern United States, are disproportionately affected by the US HIV epidemic. Patient-reported outcome (PRO) data collection can improve patient outcomes and provide oft-overlooked data on mental health, substance use, and patient adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

Objective: We piloted the use of an electronic tablet to collect PRO data on social and behavioral determinants of health among people with HIV at the Meharry Community Wellness Center, an HIV clinic affiliated with a Historically Black Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
