Acute diverticulitis represents a significant disease burden in the United States and developed world. This article examines current trends in the treatment of acute diverticulitis and concentrates on the utility of antibiotics in acute uncomplicated cases managed in the outpatient setting. The literature was reviewed for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to discern the best practice and recommendations for antibiotics for diverticulitis.

Patient demographics vary by region, with urban areas correlating with higher mortality rates. This study attempts to determine the factors associated with 30-day mortality at a single VA medical center in an urban setting.
