It is self-evident that our chests expand and contract during breathing but, surprisingly, exactly how individual alveoli change shape over the respiratory cycle is still a matter of debate. Some argue that all the alveoli expand and contract rhythmically. Others claim that the lung volume change is due to groups of alveoli collapsing and reopening during ventilation.

- A study was conducted analyzing the impact of preoperative antibiotic duration on infectious complications in these high-risk patients, involving a review of 407 cases from five institutions between 2018 and 2023.
- Results showed that patients on a long course of antibiotics (>3 days) had significantly fewer infectious complications (1.9%) compared to those on a short course (≤3 days) at 7.6%, suggesting a longer duration may be beneficial in preventing infections.
